Hi guys,

I really need some help/guidance on these questions.

*An amine can be formed when 2-iodobutane is heated with ammonia in a sealed tube.*

- Draw and name the product - am I right in thinking the product is 2-aminobutane/butylamine?

- Give a characteristics test (with the result that would be observed) to show the presence of an amine

*The amine produced in the above in the above reaction forms as a mixture of two optical isomers*

- Draw the two isomers of this amine

- State how you can distinguish between the two isomers

- State the type of isomerism displayed by this amine

Any help would be really appreciated, thank you!

Hi guys...
Are you aware that there might be gals here too?

I'd use an excess of ethanolic ammonia in a sealed tube.

Are you expected to know a test for amines? I doubt it. Which exam board/level are you working at?

The two isomers of butan-2-amine are optical. You can distinguish between them by their effect on plane polarised light.

Habit - I use 'guys' as a very general term!

No there won't be any test or anything but I basically need to give a characteristics tests as if I was actually doing one. I basically have no idea!

I doubt you are expected to know about amine testing, but try here:

Chemguide is usually your friend. I see no reason to make this an exception.
