This may be a silly response but have you tried the one on campus? (I think there's one, gyms/sport aren't really my kind of thing)

Campus gym is 30 odd quid per term. Off-campus gyms would be 30 quid per month.

If you've not got transport then the campus gym will be your best bet. I'm a member of Next Gen (for my sins) where the membership prices will screw you - i started on £44 a month - extortionate in my opinion, but *almost* worth it for the facilities and atmosphere, but it's going up to £47 in January. I can't even quit because i've not been going for a year yet, only a couple of months - joined over the summer. Grrr...

If you've got transport, try Courtney's gym over by Monks Cross. The swimming pool is tiny and ****e but the gym itself is nice, £30 a month with no contract so you can quit whenever you want with a month's notice.

There was another one advertising at Fresher's fair that i'd not heard of, don't know where that is. But if you're bothered about price just stick with the campus gym - it's not tooo bad. I just wanted a good swimming pool, i love to swim.
I've checked out the campus gym, and it's £93 for 6 months. I take it that is good then? I nearly fainted when I saw the price! And you need sports centre membership which is £25 or so . . .

Why is it so damned expensive?

I don't think you'll find anything cheaper anywhere in York than the campus gym tbh. £93 for 6 months is only just over £15 a month, and you'll prob have to join the sports center if you do any sports clubs that practice there.

Just don't join Next Gen. I love it, but it's only worth the money if you go at least 5 times a week and spend a considerable time there. Or if you do lots of the classes. Sadly i don't have time atm for that sort of commitment - bloody final year, so i'm really not getting my money's worth.

If you're only thinking of going occasionally then Courtney's does a day rate, i think it's around about £5 each time you go. But it is a bus ride (or 2) away from campus, probably cyclable though....
Aww, I miss my gym from back home. You only had to pay £2-3 at a time for as long as you liked in the gym.

Ebor Fitness, down by the river, is £150 for 12 months. Its decent, I used to be a member. It's only been open just over a year, and the air was all rubbery/carpety back when I was there - poorly ventilated. At freshers' fair they were giving out passes for a free session - if you didn't get one then I can give you one, I have lots.

What do you want from the gym? I have weights in my garage...
Courtney's is definitely cyclable - I work at Waterworld (where the swimming pool is - it has a 16m long fitness pool as well as fun pools, but the fun pools aren't open during the week except Wednesday evening and during hols) and I cycled there from Alcuin Ave (by the traffic lights at the end of Green Dyke's Lane) and it took about 20mins

One of my former housemates worked at Courtney's and she could run it in about 20 minutes. I used to cycle from Alcuin to Monks Cross (Where I worked) in 20 minutes, and it's about a 60 minuteish walk? There's also a bus.
Hey, i am torn between Uni's atm and i'm trying to see if York is for me.
Does anyone have any useful details regarding the Campus Gym...like people mention that it is crap and that there are limited amount of weights...i'm not really bothered about weights ,does anyone know if there are treadmills, bikes, crosstrainers and rowing machines??

Yeah, I'd like to know this also.

yea the weights are now EXTREMELY limit. They just rennovated the gym and stuff, though I'm not sure what they did exactly, it looks much the same as before. There's treadmills/bikes/rowing machines, I don't know how many of each - you could e-mail the sports centre about it.

If you don't like it and don't mind paying more for another gym then there's several around, including the expensive NextGeneration gym just next to campus, that's nearly £50/month for students iirc.

btw York is a great place

There's also a Courtney's at Monks Cross.

The campus gym isn't fantastic (from what I hear, I've never been), but it has just been refurbished and afaik it has all the basics like treadmills, x-trainers, etc...

There are about 8 treadmills, 12 bikes, 5 crosstrainers and 3 rowing machines and a ton of other equipment for toning and stuff. To be honest I never had a problem getting onto any of the machines when I wanted to use one - it's actually not a bad gym as far as equipment is concerned. If you're into weightlifting it may be rubbish, but if you just want somewhere to do some cardio and tone it's actually not bad at all for the price.
thank you for the info!
only 8 treadmills and 12 bikes!!
god that's tiny.....still,i am defo going to join if/when i go....

Don't join Next Generation, they are really nice when you sign up and give them your money, after that customer service disappears, plus you have to give them 3 months notice when you want to cancel (£120). Keep away, don't be impressed by all the machines and stuff, it really is Globalgym from Dodgeball - you have been warned.

I love Next Gen. Yes it's expensive, but if you actually use it (as i do) and go to classes or use the pool and other facilities regularly then i think it's worth it.

Obviously, if you didn't use it much then it's prob a waste of money. But i find the fact that it is expensive an extra incentive to go!

Is there a swimming pool on campus?
