Under reasons why HF has a lower boiling point than water despite having greater hydrogen bond strength my textbook lists one of the points as
"Not all of the hydrogen bonds in HF are broken on vaporization since HF is substantially polymerized, even in gas phase"

Can someone please explain his point to me I'm not sure what they are talking about here, I know enthalpy of vaporization is the amount of energy to completely separate and convert a liquid to gas at a temperature but I'm lost at the rest? How does polymerisation fit in here?

I'm Edexcel if it matters

Gaseous hydrogen fluoride is actually a mixture of different polymers (dimers, trimers etc) of HF so all the hydrogen bonds do not have to be broken unlike with H2O as in water vapour all hydrogen bonds have broken.
