I'd like to have one though, just to have a look at the kinda thing we're gonna be doing, wouldn't do any swotting tho! Let me kno if u do get anything or hear anymore! Are you doing Bsc or BA? x

hey.ive emailed the geog dept at durham just to be sure cause i cudda swore that i read a reading list in a letter that i recieved but now might have lost.i'll let u kno wat they say.i'm doing BA, i'm not a science minded person at all (did history & eng lang/lit also)i'm praying that i dont struggle at the physical stuff, thats the 1 thing i'm quite worried about, that and making new mates!
Yeah, i'm doing BA as well. I did English Lit/Lang and Psychology so i'm not a science type of person either. I'm also a little worried about the physical parts coz i didnt really enjoy or understand them! Don't worry about mates, i'l b ya mate! Lol! x

I didn't get a reading list last year for law, and i'm pretty sure my geographically minded house mates didn't either. Amy can tell you more, she did geography last year. You might have got a list of text books you'll need, coz you usually get one of them, so maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I'm doing geography too! I got a letter from the geography department not long ago but it definately didn't mention a reading list. I don't think we actually need to do any reading before we go (yay!)

Actually I just found this:

Do I need to read particular books before arriving?

We do not insist on students reading particular preparatory texts but we will encourage you to read widely and plentifully and any reading done in the summer will not be harmful. Generally, we do not have single textbook recommendations for courses but provide various reading suggestions. The following books are frequently referenced in Level One Modules:

Physical Geography
Atkins, P., Simmons, I. and Roberts, B.K. (1998) People, land and time: an historical introduction to relations between landscape, culture and environment. London: Arnold.
Bell, M., and Walker, J.C. (1992) Late Quaternary Environmental Change, London: Longman..
Strahler, A. and Strahler A. (2000) Introducing Physical Geography, New York: Wiley.
Summerfield, M.A. (1997) Global Geomorphology. London: Longman.

Human Geography
Allen, T. and Thomas, A. (eds) (2000) Poverty and development: into the 21st century, Oxford: OUP.
Dicken, P. (1998) Global shift: transforming the world economy, London: Harper & Row
Johnston, R.J. Taylor, P.J. and Watts, M. (eds) (1995) Geographies of global change, Oxford: Blackwell
Cloke, P., Crang, P. and Goodwin, M. (1999) Introducing human geographies, London: Arnold.

Information Technology for Geographers
Dorling, D. and Fairbairn, D. (1997) Mapping: ways of representing the world. Longman, Harlow
Griffiths, D., Stirling, W.D. & Weldon, K.L. (1998) Understanding data: principles and practice of statistics. Brisbane: Wiley
Kneale, P. (1999) Study skills for geography students. London: Arnold.

So there you go, I guess we get a choice whether we want to read beforehand or not

thats the list i was looking for, thank u!fantastic...we have a choice, and mine is NOT 2 get any of those books and read up before we start uni, the reason being i'm just 2 darn lazy. i see ure from Australia, i hope this isnt 2 annoying but i just wanted 2 express my sheer love and devotion to Neighbours and any future spoils/storylines would be much appreciated. also Sarah, i feel EXACTLY the same bout physical geog, u made me feel heaps better and i'm not as worried about making new friends now either!ta.x

Hey, I would just like to say that i think any one doing geog Degree is fantastic and/or slightly mad.. i was literally forced to continue geog into A2 as a 4th subject- and it nearly killed me! so i have much admiration for anyone who can stick it!

Bear in mind rob that Durham geog dept was ranked top 5 by the Guardian and top by the Times this year. It has international reputation and it is competitive. However:

Durham Geog Dept Website
We want bright and committed people from all backgrounds to apply in the knowledge that they will be treated fairly. We do not use a standard offer, but most of our undergraduate students obtain a mix of As and Bs at A level.

Hope that helps, and best of luck applying. Pick Collingwood! Not least because I'll be there!

hey Pippa.personally i'm gonna go for me being slighty mad, geography has never really been a fave subject of mine, my thoughts about it have changed constantly over the years, but i guess i feel positive about it now. sorry to hear doing geog as a 4th subject nearly killed u! wat are u doing at Uni?

4 the geographers, got a reply from some woman from durham geog dept. she sed no reading list was sent out, and that we will get one when we arrive in October.simple as that, phew.
Hey, the grades u need 2 read Geog at Durham is AAB. I got AAC and was accepted though so i think if your personal statement is good and they like the sound of you then you are in with a chance.

Oh good, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to reading all of those books anyway so just as well we don't have to bother!
