Cambridge students 'work as prostitutes'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...nvarsity110.xml

Students at Cambridge University are working as prostitutes, strippers and escorts to earn extra money, it has been claimed.

Some female students are working as call girls and lapdancers, while several hundred students or former students are said to be signed up to a single escort agency.

One student is reported to have been a £50-an-hour prostitute in the city who slept with between 40 and 50 men in a two month period during her first year at the prestigous university.

She told a university newspaper she had met other students doing the same.

The unnamed student, who has since given up the work, said she started out of “curiosity” and because another job was not paying enough. She said: “I met other students who did it too. Once you’ve done it, it is tempting. If you need quick easy money, it’s there.”

She added: “Clients did like the fact that I was a Cambridge student and so did the agency.

“They liked having a classier girl there it was good for business.”

She added: “In the end I left of my own accord. I just didn’t fancy doing it anymore. It did affect my studies, but it was good while it lasted.”

Another university student said she had worked as a lapdancer at weekends, travelling to a northern city and earning hundreds of pounds a night. She told the Varsity newspaper: “I started just after I split up with my boyfriend. I wanted to do something that would ******* him off.”

Though describing the work as “degrading”, she said she sometimes earned up to £300 per night.

She added: “The only reason I dance now is for the money, it is such easy cash in hand. I have a boyfriend, who would like me to stop, but I’m not going to stack shelves in Morrison’s for £5.50 an hour, when I could do this.”

An online website specialising in escort services from Oxbridge and 'Ivy League’ students claims to have nearly 350 current or former students from the university on its books.

However, despite some charging hundreds of pounds, the site insists it offers strictly a dinnerdate service and all those registered must agree not to solicit for sex.

Last night, none of the local escort agencies around Cambridge contacted by the Daily Telegraph said they had students working for them.

One escort agency manager said: “We don’t know what these people do during the day though and we don’t ask. I can imagine students may want to earn money or pay off debts like anyone else.”

Dr Rob Wallach, Secretary of the Senior Tutors’ Committee, said: “There should be no reason that students should find themselves in such severe financial difficulty that they would have to resort to prostitution.

“However the University and Colleges are aware that students can find themselves in financial difficulty and give support where they can.

“We have no way of knowing whether the claim made in the Varsity article is in fact true. We are most concerned by the report and College Senior Tutors would do everything they could to give support to students well before any found themselves in such a situation.“

lol, it's their choice. However, a very dubious choice...

Why is the fact they go to Cambridge even relevant?

I was just thinking that

I think the figures may have been slightly inflated here... several hundred students eh? So, possibly every other girl :p:

It was in the tabloids - the significance being that Cambridge is viewed as the elite, the creme..... Roxanne Syndrome is viewed as something dirty, druggies do for a quick buck in the ghettooooo. It's just one more taboo. And, Cambridge/ Oxford students aren't supposed to work?

****s sake do you know how many people i know who escort for cash. Loads.

Tbh, I never knew so many students were involved in the business...Have they got no dignity? I mean, of course it’s their choice, but seriously…prostitution??? Are they really that desperate for money? :\

Yer, I agree... It IS a bit much. Each to their own though. I'm just saying that a vast majority of people that read these things would be shocked at that kind of behaviour coming from intelligent and (whilst this IS a piece of assertion) those from well to do families. There are a thousand ways to earn some money. For the record, were they definately prostitutes and not just actual escorts.... thats the sort of thing that could be misreported?

escorting stripping and prostitution are hardly the same as each other :s:

Reply 13

When I say escorts I mean the legal kind and not simply picky prostitutes

Hmm, term time jobs both not allowed, and likely to kill you with the workload. Actually, looking at my loan-related bits of paper, prostitution looks increasingly tempting... A girl I know (not at Oxford, but a student) made a few hundred pounds by doing a bit of soft porn, slightly rude photographs in school uniform... Last I heard she was planning on paying off her loan that way. Practically money for nothing. And I hear dominatrices are very well paid... But there'd presumably be a bit of initial spending on equipment if one was to do it freelance...
Eek, I'm thinking about these things far too seriously.

They just like sexy time.

Reply 16

This is why I'm applying to Oxford...

Nah, seriously - I never knew it was so common though. I can't even spot a prostitute in Hull, though, so maybe I just view everyone with rose-tinted spectacles.

I believe they get paid more money. I think theres a company which specifically poaches Oxbridge students (used to be called Oxbridge Escorts or something), to cater to high-class clients with our sparkling wit, incessant whinging and bags under our eyes that hang around for 8 weeks.

What's so undignified about prostitution? I'd say it's a much less demeaning line of work than sitting on a supermarket till in a humiliating uniform being ordered around by stupid people who nonetheless have more senior jobs than you.

Lol, theoretically it's easy money. Honestly, I wouldn't condemn someone for choosing to do any of the above to raise funds. It IS money for nothing as long as there is nothing in your sense of morality that would prevent such things... not necessarily 'loose morals' but if you're religious or you're in a stable relationship, you'd have to think twice... I don't think I could do it personally... even though most of my friends think i'm sex obsessed.. :p:
