Fog phobia!!

People always laugh when I tell them this, but I'm absolutely petrified of fog! :s-smilie:

We've been invited to a bonfire night do next week and I can't go because I'm worried about the fog! My Aunt and Uncle live quite far out in the countryside, and it does tend to be foggy there, so I don't really fancy my chances. I really want to go though, as it sounds as though its going be really fun... but the thought of facing the thick, terrifying mist is just too much for me!!

My Mum's scared too (in fact I think she passed the fear onto me), and it's a real pain, seen as we live near the countryside, if we want to nip out for a quick bite to eat in little pub, and can't!

It's quite debilitating at times, but I don't think there's a cure. Even if I saw a hypnotist, I don't know whether it could take that fear away. As soon as I see a wisp of fog I'm convinced I'm going to die.

Any help/suggestions appreciated!

wow that's a newy for me.
**** the hypnotist, just a general psychologist can help with all sorts of phobias.
You shouldn't let the fog rule your life!

Aww, this post is cute. :p:
idk, i'd suggest you see a psychi
that, or just try and overcome it yourself, go through the fog with someone you feel totally at ease and safe with, just take a stroll or something. OR distract yourself with the bonfire/fireworks on that night you really want to go.

i hope you get to go - and get over your phobia. :frown:

there's not much you can do for a phobia. :s-smilie:

I live on the outskirts... the borderline of Derbyshire.

It's not that I'm worried someone's going to attack... that'd be like a film. It's driving in it that's the problem- I think either someone will crash into us because they can't see, or else we'll crash and fall down the side of the road (if out in the countryside).

Maybe I should try a hypnotist as suggested... maybe it would help! :s-smilie:

wen ppl say try and overcome it yourself, the bonfire will probably be with a huge load of ppl, wont it? if so, then you will be a large company, and so itll give you a bit more ease to overcome it! just a thought, gettin over fears with ppl is always better thn on your own!

I used to be scared of escalators when i was younger and while I am still slightly nervous i got over them by just going on them all the time. Maybe exposing yourself to fog a little bit at a time would help? Something that you might want to think about is why you are scared of the fog because if you can address this issue you may be able to get over it. There are also a number of self help books you could read. If these things don't work you can go and see your GP who may be able to give you more advice.

I am the opposite.

I love fog. Very heavy, so you can't see more than 10 metres in front of yourself. You're covered by the fog in a way. Shut off from the outside world. Noone can see you, you don't have to take in everything that goes on around you. Quiet and peaceful.

Sorry, hope I don't sound like a crazy person.

I dunno, maybe a positive view on fog will help you change your mind about it?

Have you ever asked your mum why she's scared of the fog?

I'm asking this because you said that she passed it on to you right?
So maybe she is the root of your phobia.

Talk to her.

Watch this, over and over and over again.

Talk to your mum about it, and if you find that it's a really big problem and stopping you going out, on a regular basis, speak to your GP and they could refer you for CBT/ counselling.
