Edinburgh Medicine A100 2018 Entry Hopefuls

Sorry if there is already a thread for this, if so link me to it please!

Thought I'd make a thread for everyone planning to apply to Edinburgh University this October, I've just seen that they've removed the requirement for a 4th subject at A-Level to study medicine, and I'm so excited as this now means I am eligible to apply
They also have study abroad plans which are exciting as not many unis do these for medicine anymore!
What grades are you aiming for/working at?
Have you done work experience, if so what?
What other universities are you looking at?
Do you have any plans for accommodation (e.g. catered, self-catered, flat, uni acc)?

Hiya! Im also planning in applying to Edinburgh (its my top choice at the moment ^-^), also St Andrews, Cambridge and Kings I guess... not so sure about my 5th option though. I hope to get A* A* A A, (for chem, maths, bio and Portuguese) and in terms of work experience i got a few shadowing opportunities along with lots of volunteering haha. I'd probably live in the halls for the 1st year as it makes it easier to socialising then probably move to a flat haha. What about you? Are your applying from England or Scotland?
Best of luck!

Your grades are amazing, and wow Portuguese!! I'm hoping for at least A*AA in biology, chemistry and maths and doing EPQ (but not started this yet)!! Similar to you with my work experience, and have a couple more booked for the summer hols.
Me too about the accommodation - I haven't visited Edinburgh yet but am planning to go in the summer, I can't wait! I'm applying from England. My choices at the moment (subject to change lol) are Edinburgh, Oxford, Nottingham and I'm unsure about the others, considering Hull-York, Keele, but really undecided tbh. Are you applying for a 'back-up' course e.g. biomed as well?

Thank you, best of luck to you too! Hopefully we can keep each other updated and discuss through the difficult application process
Hey you might have seen me post on the 2017 thread but I have an offer from Edinburgh for Medicine so if you wanna ask anything I'll answer 😊

Hahaha, thanks but i'm really just trying to be optimistic in regards to my grades (because my bio AS exams didn't go that great).
Same for me and the EPQ... what topic are you thinking of writing about? And I haven't visited Edinburgh yet, but they have an open day on sep that i really want to go to.
Yes i am, but I'd probably wait for next year if i don't get in first time around (that's if my grades go as planned lol).

Yes, I'd really love that ^-^ (because i think i'm the only person in my school applying there for med - luckily enough hehe). Which exam boards do you take btw?

Me too about my biology AS, they were the ones I was most confident in but even chemistry went better than those haha!! I'm thinking of something to do with medical ethics, maybe regarding abortion, cancer treatment or euthanasia..something controversial but I'm still unsure. What about you?
Ahh I'm thinking of going to edinburgh in the summer, just on a student-led tour rather than an open day! I was researching and researching unis yesterday, it all seems so real and close now.
I do AQA for all my subjects, wbu?

OCR for bio and Portuguese; Edexcel for maths and chemistry. Ohh, there's a really good book about that, its called a very short introduction to Medical ethics written by an Oxford professor; I've read it several times already and its so so so good. I was thinking about writing mine on Cytokine storm (or anything related to autoimmunity) or on leukaemia and new treatments but i'm not too sure yet. How are you revising for your UKCAT btw? because so far the verbal reasoning bit is the one i struggle with the most :frown:

Ahh thanks so much I will definitely have to read that ! That sounds really good.
I've just ordered a UKCAT book recently, but it only came 2 days ago and to be honest I've not really done anything yet. The only thing I've done is some questions on the medic portal but I did atrociously.. need to up my game. I'm not planning to do it until September 5th so I have a while yet, when are you doing yours?
Feeling guilty atm for doing close to no work for A2 but I feel like I just need to wind down after exam season!!

Thank you!! Can I ask, what are you planning on doing for your accommodation during your course? I know it's a bit of a random question but obviously accommodation is very important and I can't find too much information online, thanks!

I got 810! And I would say definitely use medify as it's the best resource as it's simulates the real exam and medic portal too. The 1000q I didn't rate as the questions were not the same style and didn't help as much because it's on the computer so wasn't the same

Hey! I applied for accomodation a few weeks ago and you put your 5 choices (I think was 5) in order and they say they hope to give you one of those, won't know for sure until after results day though. I'm assuming that after 1st year I will house share
just sat my ukcat, got 685 and band 3. 580 on VR made me really nervous and it was all down hill from there. how badly is the band 3 gonna hurt me?

If you scroll down to page 33 on the pdf linked above, it will tell you how their point system works so it might help ^^

Btw, which other unis are you planning on applying to?

Ah cheers. I've decided on UCL and Birmingham, and I'm considering Oxford, Edinburgh, King's, St George's.

Have you done your UKCAT? If yes, any tips on QR, I keep running out of time half way though it.
