Looking for mapping and timeline software

I'm a PhD student, writing my thesis on geopolitics. I'm looking for software to produce timelines and maps like the ones below. Ideally, I would like free software or at least software I can install locally instead of a subscription.

In case anyone else is looking for the answer this is what I've found:

Qgis (alternative is Arcgis) + illustrator (alternative is Gimp)

Qgis is open source & free, Arcg is an industry and available at some universities.
