Falling Asleep In lectures

Hi,
Lately, this has become a real problem, even if I sleep for 10 or more hours the night before, I still drift off for a minute or so every minute or so (one min asleep, one kind of awake etc.) Is there any way to prevent this? I don't find my lectures overly boring, but I'm really starting to miss things because of this.
How can I stay more awake? I've tried writing/tapping my foot/moving about, but that doesn't help.

Drink a big cup of coffee before goin to uni or school...it sure helps me stay wide awake and active for 6 hours atleast every morning (H)

Tbh I think everyone does it to a certain extent. I find it depends a lot on the lecturer- if they're good and keep it interesting and engaging, it's easier to stay awake. However if they speak in monotone to the whiteboard and dim the lights, I'm gone. You can see people in my lectures, now we're down to not many people per class, doing the whole nodding and jerking awake thing- hilarious!

Short of Red Bull, I don't know what to suggest, sorry. You could always record the lecture so if you miss bits you can listen again.

It happens regularly lol - the lecturer is probably so boring it doesn't make much difference if you sleep through it.

There's a guy on my course who will sleep whenever it suits him. However, I simply just take the day off and sleep all day!

Lol, this is funny, don't think I've come across someone sleeping in a lecture before. I don't think it's possible to stay awake for the whole hour or two... your brain can not absorb all the information you hear, sometimes you need to 'drift off' in order to digest what you're hearing.

Just look around theres bound to be at least one person.

Its pretty normal, the only place I don't go off into my own world is in Labs, cause I'm actually dong something. Something like Algebra is, however naptime for me:biggrin: .

Most lectures I go to there is always one who falls asleep, it does go on especially if the lecturer is talking in one boring tone.

It's weird though, it never used to happen at school or college. (and I hate coffee  ).

Take some pro plus, and sit near the front.. that way you'll probably feel more awake anyway, and the thought of getting a *******ing off the lecturer will give you more of an incentive to stay awake!

i listen to music in one ear.. the lecture in the other..

DO NOT drink excessive amounts of coffee it will not help. U may need to see your doctor about an issue with sleep. They will give you a proper examination and if your at Uni will get many students. But dont drink cofffee because it actually make you even tireder

Hey, I think you need to go see your doctor. You might need a suppliment. Hope you get it sorted.

are you sure you're not getting too much sleep? ten hours sounds like a lot to me, and i always feel rubbish if i sleep for too long

going to the doctors sounds like a good idea though, just to figure out if theres a reason why

I agree with emerley, try less sleep. You might be half way through your second cycle of sleep after 10 hours, and then you'll want to carry on sleeping. Try on 7/8 hours and then a vigorous shower (with blasts of cold water in between hot water) and a caffeinated drink - don't go overboard but they can help.

Do you make notes? Don't know what subject you do, but if you try to make notes as you go I find it helps me pay attention and keep awake!

Short of that, do as others have suggested and try the doctor.

I have a lecturer who can send most of us to sleep quite easily. Most boring module with a monotone lecturer first thing on a Monday morning = not fun. I cycle to uni with music blasting after a couple of mugs of coffee and I still end up falling asleep in his lecture.

As people have suggested, try making notes in the lecture (depending on the course). If you don't like coffee, try something like Pepsi/Cola to get the caffeine into you.

I wouldn't recommend ProPlus, it just prolongs the hours your awake, you'll hate it when it catches up with you.

Yes I would back the calls for seeing your doctor. Have a look at your intake. Are you consuming enough fruit and veg?

Cheers for the replies, there's some good ideas (and some not so ) I don't think it requires me to see a Doctor, it happens a lot on buses too, and trains, warmth + rocking = zzzz...
