Hi, I’m doing unit 4 (resit) & unit 5 Edexcel biology new spec exams in June and really trying to go from a C to a B. If anyone has any notes on them please share.
The topics for unit 4 include:
• Photosynthesis
• Ecology - abiotic/biotic, definitions, and energy transfers
• Global warming - causes, effects and questions.
• Speciation and evolution
• Forensic science & the process of decay
• Importance of DNA - i.e. identification
• Micro-organisms and disease - i.e. viruses (HIV), bacteria (TB), responses to infection (Non specific & specific).
• Controlling disease - antibiotics, developing immunity, hospital acquired infections.
The topics for unit 5 include:
• Respirations
• Muscles & movement – muscles fibre, tissues of the skeletal system.
• Controlling the heart, homeostasis and responding to exercise, breathing rhythms, temperature control and exercise and human temperature regulation.
• A risk of too much/too little exercise, how healthy is your heart exercise & joints, performance enhancing drugs, ethics of performance enhancing practises.
• Sensitivity in plants – prototroph/geotroph etc
• Nervous system – impulses, the eye, co-ordination
• Brain – how it works, nature & nurture in brain dev, learning & memory, habituation, chemical balance of brain.
• Human genome and medicine, drugs from genetically modified organisms.
Thanks in advance!

HAEMOGLOBIN

HAEMOGLOBIN MOLECULES

STRUCTURE

Primary structure: 4 polypeptide chains

Secondary Structure: Each of the polypeptide chain is coiled into a helix

Tertiary structure: Each polypeptide chain is folded into a precise shape. An important factor in its ability to carry oxygen

Quaternary structure: All four polypeptide chains are linked together to form an almost spherical molecule.

Each polypeptide is associated with a haem group- which contains a ferrous ( Fe2+ ion ) Each Fe2+ ion can combine with a single oxygen molecule making a total of four O2 molecules that can be carried by a single haemoglobin molecules in humans

Ecology: Ecology is the study of inter-relationships between organisms and their environment. Its aim it to explain why organisms live where they do.

Ecosystem: A system that includes all living organisms (biotic factors) in an area as well as its physical environment (abiotic factors) functioning together as a unit.

Habitat: The physical or abiotic part of an ecosystem, i.e. a defined area with specific characteristics where the organisms live

Biotic: Any living or biological factor.

Abiotic: Any non-living or physical factor.

Population: The members of the same species living in one habitat.

Species: A group of organisms that can successfully interbreed

Community: The living or biotic part of an ecosystem, i.e. all the organisms of all the different species living in one habitat

Niche: A niche is:
• The specific area where an organism inhabits.
• The role or function of an organism or species in an ecosystem.
• The interrelationship of a species with all the biotic and abiotic factors affecting it.

these are some of the main ecology definitions.

Not really, http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=129 and the exam subforum are the two forums you should look and http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...Revision_Notes is the biology index of the revision articles.
