Hi

I was doing a past paper and they asked what would happen to the gradient if all the y values were halved how does this affect the gradient?

Thanks

Also when does the pmcc stay the same and when does it change

Hi there,

I'm not too sure about the gradient but if any linear scaling is applied on the values such as dividing them all by 2, the pmcc will remain the same.

Imagine what the line would look like if every y value was halved (try doing it with any straight line graph). You will see that the gradient will half (as will the y intercept). If all of the y values are coded by an addition/subtraction though, everything would just move up the graph by the same amount, so the gradient would not change (but the y intercept still would).
Although, Sxx, Syy and Sxy will change with multiplication/division coding (but not with addition/subtraction coding), the effects cancel each other out when the PMCC is being calculated, so this is never changed by coding.
