Yay a braces thread  I had braces. Hated them. Hated my retainer more. How long has it been since you had to wear your retainer? Did you have a final appointment with them? I had 3 final appointments  At each of which he said "Come back in 3 months". Then eventually he just said 'Right, you're done', took some photos and sent me on my merry way. He offered me a hammer to bash up my retainer because he knew how much I hated it.

its because the NHS don't pay for cosmetic dental treatment anymore - so basically they'll only pay for it if you really really need it.
luckily, i got mine off in july so i just squeezed in on the NHS but anyone that gets them now has to pay.
if your happy with your teeth then i wouldn't bother continuing with your treatment.
unfortunately, if you have to pay then you have to pay.

I have them and hate them - hopefully they'll be off in a few weeks.

Why are retainers bad? I have to have a night one...

i had braces, theyve been removed now and im havin to wear retainers whilst im asleep only. dont really mind, ther only painful if i leave them for a few days/weeks and then wear them again. I got the treatment paid for by the ever-so generous NHS who are willing to pay for non necessary sex change operations too but are reluctant to pay for necessary surgery, but thats another thread.

I'm n the middle of a 2 month retainer wearing session and they are soooo annoying! Almost prefer my brace, but atleast my retainer is practically invisible!

They are annoying because you have to take them out to eat, not fun in the school canteen "just hang on a second *slips under table* there we go!"

did anyone ever have to go to a review appointment if so what was it like?

I've also got the same problem! I had braces ages ago aswell and after my treatment had finished i had an option where i could either where them until i reached 17 or not where them at all. So i decided to wear them for a month afterwards and left it after that, however ,my teeth started to move and now they're not as perfect as before. But the real problem was that my mum had thrown my braces away lol so i couldnt really do anything about it lol!!

Anyways back to the point..... i've gone back to the dentist and i do have to pay for a new treatment. My problem was that i wasnt scared of going to the dentist and telling him what happened but the fact that i was going to have braces AGAIN!!
Why dont u change ur dentist? Get a new practitioner and start all over again if you're scared of original dentist?

(sorry for the long post...if it's long tht is  )

I have brace!!! Yae!! it's good to see how well your teeth progress, especiall from a terrible state (like i used to) to a beautiful state(getting there!!)!! I didnt know that i will have to wear a retainer tho. No one tells me. I nearly finish my treatment, my next appointment is Monday!! I remember i started a thread about brace a year ago when i just got it newly cus my lips were bleeding due to the frictions :s-smilie:

Well regarding the OP problem , i guess you just have to attend the appointment and tell your Orthodontist about it; or u could just not turn up(that's if u are happy with the way your teeth are just now). If you're having a hard time over there, transfer to other clinic, or hospital. I transfered to my Uni city because i'm 2 hours away from home.

 I know the feeling. Should've thought of that one myself..... I still have my retainer but don't need to wear it anymore, so I might be taking a hammer to them soon :p:

It's definitely worth it though; my teeth are so much better than they were. Still, I don't think you should have to pay for them, that's ridiculous - especially with the huge amount of money-wasting the NHS does. (Unless of course you had practically perfect teeth, and didn't need them done.. in which case it's fair enough).

retainers are worse...annoying things.
not sure if you have to pay though...hmm

Train tracks are horrible! Retainers are much worse though. I wore mine from year 9 to the middle of year 13 cos my teeth are so slow to adapt. They were gross!!

Isn't there some kind of rule whereby if you've broken the brace 5 times then you have to pay? I don't know. I think I remember a topic about braces from a while ago.

you will have to have retainers after youve had your braces taken off coz otherwise your teeth will go back to how they were before :frown:

i have to wear retainers at night, i had my braces off over a year ago and my dentist told me to keep wearing my retainers until my early 20's! :frown:

i'm 19 and i have braces, just on the top jaw, i had them when i was younger to straighten them a bit but i was unhappy with a gap left. They're not very nice and i felt really self conscious when i first had them but i forget about them now and most people don't seem to notice really! I think it's worth having them as you have the results for the rest of your life. I get them for free though, i think if i had to pay and it was for a big problem then i would.

I was really psyched to lose the train tracks and move onto a night retainer, now I'm not so sure

The posts here make it sound like it's worse!

I've had mine 2 years, 7 months so sick of them. I've had them all my adult life :frown:
