Have I done my history exam wrong?

Usually get A stars in history and for the 10 mark essay questions I didn't describe what the 2 points were I only explained and assessed how they led to something. For example I didn't describe what the Bosnian Crisis was, only explained how it caused the outbreak of war. This is what the question asked but some people are saying you need to describe the two events. The mark scheme is unclear. Feel like I've ticked all the level 3 and 4 criteria but missed level 1 and 2. How did anyone else structure their 10 mark questions?
