I've seen a lot of different times for different questions but this is this the proper time limit that has been set by the exam board?

The exam board won't set rigid times for each question. You need to make sure you have enough time for a good shot at each question.

Read the extract. Q1 is easy. Do it quickly. Q2 is the use of language for effect in a short section of the text. Three paragraphs of coherent analysis with some inference should secure eight marks.

Q3 is the structure of the whole text and usually how this engages the reader. I'd advise referring to the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, denouement model to ensure a full answer.

Then, Q4 carries twenty marks. Make sure you have at least twenty minutes to devote here (ideally a bit more). It'll be something like, 'A student said that.... How far do you agree?' personal opinions, perceptive analysis, original thoughts that are well supported with a range of evidence (devices and precise vocabulary) from the text.

Hopefully, you'll still have forty five minutes left to have fun with Q5.
