How to calculate the Variance and Standard Deviation?

Is there a formula to calculate the variance? I know the Standard Deviation is the square root of the variance but how do you work it out?

E(X^2) - [E(X)]^2

So the expected value of X^2 minus the expected value of X (all squared).
