Consulting internship applications

Any other penultimate year students applying for consulting internships this year? Where are you applying?

I'm applying to;

Accenture
PA Consulting
BCG
Corporate Value Associates
IBM (although not strictly consulting)
Marakon Associates
Monitor Group
Mercer Oliver Wyman

I've only actually sent one application so far though (lol). I just thought I'd make a separate thread because there are so many IB ones on here and all the consultancy ones seem to get lost. Was going to apply to Deloitte but it seems that places on their consulting scheme are now full :frown:

Wouldn't bother applying to IBM - have heard very bad things about it on this forum:

Also BCG is a *huge* long-shot. They're very Oxbridge-centric - their entire internship (and grad) intake in London for the last few years has been solely Oxbridge. I think Booze Allen might be slightly more open though, and I've heard very good things from them, both in terms of how good it was and how easy it made getting a grad position at MBB.

Good luck!

Hmm yeah, and they actually only have 4 internship places for people on non-computer science degrees, the guy at the careers fair told me last week

Nope. BAH is just as selective when it comes to internships (considering that Bain and Mckinsey don't offer).

Realistically, with a Manchester degree and sufficient extra curricular activities you may get interviews with Accenture, PA and IBM. BCG, Marakon, CVA, Oliver Wyman and Monitor may be long shots unless your cv is stellar.

BAH is just as selective in terms of quality, but not in terms of university. They have accepted non-Oxbridge candidates, whereas BCG haven't. It's not that the quality's any lower, it's just they look for slightly different things, in terms of university at least.
I can't really apply to BAH because I only got AAB at A Level and they specify that they require AAA.

I'm going to a PA Consulting presentation on Wednesday in Manchester, and Oliver Wyman in a couple of weeks.

My ECs and CV are excellent IMO, so I'm even going to apply to the ones that might be a long shot...

How is PA Consultings reputation? Would you say its at the top?

Nope. Fairly well respected as a full service firm, they'll be competing with Accenture, Deloitte & Capgemini for projects, but they won't be coming across MBB, Oliver Wyman, OC&C etc for work.

tbh I think Tim smells...

Why haven't I seen you this year yet?!?!

As a Moderator you really shouldn't be making such sweeping, wrong, statements. Firstly, I think there were three non-Oxbridge people on the BCG internship this year and last, and more than double that on the graduate programme.

More deeply, you seem to be posting in order to enjoy being seen to be knoweldgeable, rather than to help people out. What did you think qualified you to know the university origin of EVERY one of the dozens of people BCG has made offers to since, probably, before you knew of BCG's existence? There are so many people, and over so much time, I bet you even BCG's head of recruitment would have to check a database before knowing where they all came from. But he'd definitely be able to tell you in about five seconds of more people than you could count on your hands that disproved your assertion.

Which universities did they come from? I imagine Drogue meant solely Oxbridge out of British universities - it doesn't really change his point if they also recruit from Harvard. But am willing to be corrected, as I am sure Drogue is...

Off the top of my head, a couple of LSE, another from another London uni, and a load of internationals. Someone who, unlike me or Drogue, works at BCG, could probably list a lot more...

I am willing to accept if I'm wrong, that statement came from a friend who does work there, who told me all the other interns in London were Oxbridge. If I'm wrong, then please disregard the statement, but I'm yet to be convinced.

However to respond to a couple of points you made, firstly, I clearly mentioned the last few years, so not "the university origin of EVERY one of the dozens of people BCG has made offers to since, probably, before you knew of BCG's existence?". Secondly, that post was not intended to be "seen to be knoweldgeable, rather than to help people out", it was solely intended to help the OP in his decision of where to apply.

The general ethos of the post comes from before then though, from a discussion about grad recruitment possibilities with the head of HR from another MBB consultancy while doing national sponsorship for AIESEC, who mentioned that BCG particularly are Oxbridge centred and that it was quite normal for their entire graduate intake to be Oxbridge. Now, obviously being at a different MBB consultancy they may not have been as honest about it, but it seemed to fit with everything else I've been told.

I will point out this, like the OPs question, did solely relate to people joining their internship/graduate programme in London straight from uni, and not either experienced hires or MBAs joining as consultants. I am still willing to accept that I'm wrong, as I don't know the entire intake. However everything I've posted has been pieced together from talking with HR or friends who work at MBB consultancies.

Lastly, as a moderator I tend to post exactly as I did before - trying to help others to the best of my ability with what I know. Occasionally I am mistaken, and I will admit that a lot of what I say is taken from things people have said to me. Sometimes it may be wrong, but it's always designed to try and help answer the question at hand, and is not simply made-up speculation, but the product of things I have been told.

I'm still waiting to hear back from them. When did you send your application?

Could I be seriously considered for internships with the big London consultancy firms if I did a History degree at a Uni like Bristol or Kings?

The short answer is...yes!
