Whoops...shut finger in car door!

Hi,

Earlier today I was a bit silly and shut my finger in the car door.
Just the tip of it, it's not broken or anything as i can still move it.
However, it did swell up pretty badly, and the fingernail has turned blue :s-smilie:

Basically, it still hurts LOADS, and i cant use it for anything (taking a while to type this!!). I was wondering if anyone had any advice?

I attach a pic!

wow that looks painfull. Keep an eye on it hoppefully nothing wrong but you may of chipped/broke a bone in your finger. keep ice handy and pain killers if it still sore in a day or two go to the doctor see if they can prescribe anything for it.

Doctor.

Happened to me once and I only found out it was broken after an x-ray. If you don't do anything it'll become a dead body part, and you'll have it amputated...

Put some ice on your finger for a good while until the swelling goes down, then leave it for a bit and try not to use it. If you can try and strap the finger onto the one next to it as this should prevent you from over using it and it will help support it.
As for the blueness, you're probably going to have a black nail for a while now :frown:

haha I shut my finger in a car door last year! Mine turned out to be broken, only went to a&e because I got nagged, it didnt even hurt that much... mine was a little worse though cos the underside on the top third of my finger split, and now I have a lovely scar and no feeling in that part of my finger! I would suggest getting it x-rayed though

Are you nuts? He should be going to the hospital immediately, not waiting for his finger to fall off!

Well, already I think the swelling has gone down a bit. I don't really want to go to hospital unless absolutely necessary - hence why I made this thread! If I put it on ice, and review the situation in the morning, would that be being really stupid?

My nail was fine though!

ooo and another thing, if you go to a&e, just tell them that the finger you've hurt is on the hand you write with.. i got nearly to the front of the waiting list when they knew that :s-smilie:

due to the size of the blistering/bleeding you should go to your doctor soon as. it may need draining

Is it stupid to risk losing a finger? Hmmm. GO TO THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW! Ice and pain killers won't save your finger if it is broken.

Firstly there is nothing much doctors can do for a broken finger. except put some weird support on it. and secondly there may be several hour wait before injured is seen.

Id go down to a&e just to be sure all is well, can't say it looks very pretty!

Even if he were to bother the A&E dept and the bone in his finger was fractured it is unlikely any kind of treatment exists for it, not like a broken leg; THEN you get quick march to A&E, lets have some proportion.

Possibility your nail might drop off, however.

Really?

How do they treat a broken finger?
I would assume a roll of fabric plaster, in which case your local pharmacy is the best port of call.
