hey guys, i really want to make a mark scheme for the biology paper today. i will try remember some of the questions so add to them (perhaps we could make a google docs?)

I will start with the beginning question, do u agree with this?

1. How does having high quantities of lipids in your diet lead to heart disease? (4)
- Arteries get clogged with cholesterol
- (less) aerobic respiration and (more) anaerobic respiration;
- lactic acid / low(er) pH;
- enzymes denature;
- (muscle) cells die / cannot contract;(less) supply of glucose / oxygen

b) what are the soluble compounds the body needs? (2)
- Amino Acids
- Glycerol / Glucose

c) Name one use of lipids (1)
- Insulation or to store energy

d) Make a food chain from lines 12-15 (2)
Planktons --> anchovies ---> salmon

e and d) don't remember those questions

2)

a) What are the uses of enzymes in genetic modification? (2)
- Ligase enzyme (sticks gene)
- Restriction enzyme (cuts gene)

b) Give an example of a vector (2?)
- Plasmid
- It is used to carry foreign genetic material into another cell

3)

a) How does this structure protect the eye when it is exposed to lots of light? (2)
- Circular muscles contract
- Pupil constricts
- Less light enters the eye so it cannot cause damage

b) Why would one not be able to see without this structure (the optic nerve) (2)
- It sends impulses to the brain
- Without it, images would not be translated

c) Why can a person not see with a cataract? (2)
- Less light enters the eye
- Less light can be absorbed by the retina

d) If 41% of the population are over 40, how many have cataracts if 21.7% over 40 have cataracts? (2)
- around 27 million (let me know if you remember)

e) Why do some people come to the conclusion that lansterol cures cataracts? (2)
- Over 10 mice did not have cataracts so this shows that it can be cured (not sure on this one what you need for each mark)

f) Why do some people disagree with this conclusion? (2)
- Experiment not repeated
- Rat's eyes are different to human's eyes

4)

a) Why can seeds survive without photosynthesis? (2)
- They have food stores with contain glucose
- Glucose and oxygen allows them to respire and grow

b) How can you tell that germination has occurred? (1)
- roots and shoots grow

c) Which group of seeds will germinate / grow the most and why? (4)
- the group with all the variables as;
- water allows for a solution for chemical reactions
- Oxygen for aerobic respiration
- Temperature for enzymes

5)

a) fill in table

Red Blood Cells They transport Oxygen (1)

Phagocytes (1) Engulf pathogens

Platelets Make the blood clot to protect itself (1)

Plasma Transports nutrients

b) What is the function of memory cells? (4)

- They create antibodies
- Bind to specific Antigens
- Second response- faster antibody production
- no infection

6)
a) What is the system which controls the internal environment?
- Homeostasis

b) How does this structure adapt to the body moving into hot temps?

- Release sweat
- Evaporates off the body
- Cools the body down

i think one other question on question 1 were about fish farming?

there was one about why there is a decrease in wild fish stocks.
i like completely misread this question and started talking about fish farms ugh, so let me know if you have the answer to this.

Someone else has already made one but hoping you can make a better one, take a look at this

Please could someone answer this:
If for the enzyme genetic modification question, I wrote ligase enzyme cuts out the DNA and also creates recombinant DNA.
For vector question, I wrote that plasmid was the vector, because plasmid was used to transfer the genetic material,
How many marks would I get???

i can't be certain but i think for the enzyme question, you would only get 1 mark for ligase enzymes as i think for the other mark you would have to say restriction enzymes too, but I'm not 100% sure tbh. The vector question, I think you would get full marks, but once again I can't be sure.

Thanks! Just one more thing, would I lose marks for saying gene instead of DNA, it was rather a silly error!

The last question was about Transgenic animals:

What are transgenic animals?
A- Transgenic animals are animals that contain foreign genes from a different type of species/animal/organism

Use?
Making organs

Benefits?

1- No rejection
2- Can produce high numbers to meet demands
