I didn't know the name for it but my dad has it.

He can't smell smelling salts they use to wake semi-conscious people or anything. It affects his taste too.

Numerous broken noses caused it

Yeah I am reading up on it on wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anosmia

I think my brother has congenital asnosmia (where he was born not being able to smell) so apparently he has a developed sense of taste and can taste food just like us

It seems so wierd not being able to smell though!
I would miss the smell of toast and boys so much! lol

but apparently it is quite common, strange!

if he's had this all his life, olfactory nerve is faulty, this is cranial nerve 1. Unfortunately there's nothing that can be done about it.

Gemz87- when we "taste" things, it's an interaction between smelling and actually tasting, so makes sense taste would be affected too

William Wordsworth had this problem lol.

me and my friends have talked about which of the 5 senses we could live without if we had to choose and a lot of people say smell. obviously barely anyone will say hear/sight...

personally i'd say taste.

probably.

anyway, sorry, that was a bit off topic.

I think I'd say taste too
I like smells cos they remind me of nice things and people
obviously i couldn't function v.well without seeing and hearing
and touch...i couldn't give that up lol

taste it is
would make dieting easier at least, an we'd still be able to taste flavour because we'd be able to smell and a lot of taste is made up of smell anyways

lol but yeah going off topic

I've ended up with hyposmia after a really bad cold several years ago. Sometimes it seems like my sense of smell is returning to normal, but then I'll get another minor cold or something and it drops again.

I was going to say it must be really strange for him, but if he's never been able to smell then it's just normal to him.

I'd say taste too then I'd eat simply for nutritional value and could eat all the healthy things that are yucky and not eat the bad yummy foods haha.
