I've had this before. It just stopped doing it after a while.

I recommend that you go see the Doc if the pain continues as it's obviously important to have a working jaw for eating and talking purposes!

mine clicks loads. almost evertime i open my mouth wide. doesnt hurt though so doctors are relucant to do anything. would be worth you going though if its causing discomfort

This happens to me every now and then. Doesn't it have something to do with the friction of the jaw joint in its skull socket? Something, such as fluid, can slightly alter the feel of it. The clicking is actually the sound of the fluid smacking against the bone, like waves against a rock.

I am sure it will disappear soon enough, but as others have said, if it persists or gives you discomfort then you may want to see a doctor.

Meh, my jaw has been clicky ever since I got my braces taken off.

If I lie on my left side to go to sleep, my jaw will "fall" to the left and so I end up laying there with a wonky jaw, LOL!

Sometimes when I yawn or open my mouth too wide, it gets jammed and I end up looking like a goldfish...

If it does hurt a lot, then go get it checked out. You sound like you have what I had last time (unrelated to braces problem); I woke up one day and realised my jaw was "dislocated" so whenever I chewed, my jaw would hurt, but it went away after a few days.

sounds like TMJ to me (i had it last summer) its caused probably cos u clench or grind ur teeth in your sleep. i'd suggest going to see your dentist as soon as possible because the longer you leave it the more likely your gonna do permanant damage. The most likely outcome will be him making you a "bote splint" which is like a retainer but harder and more moulded to your teeth....which you'll have to wear when u sleep for the next couple of months!

but most important see your dentist!

yes ellsbells is right, you should see your dentist, I was doing work experience with one and a girl came in complaining of the same problem and he just said not to move it in an abnormal way because it's a joint that designed to move in one plane only, as in up and down, not side to side. And he gave the girl a leaflet of exercises she should do to help loosen it up.

yeah defo talk to someone since its come on so quickly. although it may leave in the same way.

its something i've inherited from my dad. we both get it badly. my main problem with it is that it prevents certain sexual activities, cos its too painful to keep my jaw open for long.

:ditto: same for me, I've always put it down to lacking much in the way of bodyfat so the tendons just grate against the jaw (or something like that). If it hurt though I'd probably do something about it.

My jaw does that as well! Whenever i open it too wide it cracks and if i wiggle it from side to side it like pops out of place. never thought of going to see something about it though. maybe seeing your dentist would be a good idea and maybe i will as well. and yeah scarlet ibis i know what you mean.

Mine clicks too. Has done for years, as well as pretty much every other joint in my body. Doesn't hurt anymore though.

I think your dentist can tell if you grind your teeth at night so go and have a check up and ask if he can see anything  If not, it's a trip to the GP!

I've suffered from this before.

And got told by the Doctor it's because I grind my teeth at night or during the day. I didn't notice I did it until he mentioned it.

The pain went after about 4 days.

Erm, too much info I think  ......also I hope you didn't mean that it affects your your dad in the same way!!

Oh good, now I know I'm not wierd! I have no idea if I grind my teeth. I do have a fixed brace (top only) though, so maybe that has something to do with it. If it's still hurting by the time I go home for Christmas, I'll go see my dentist.

My dentist suggested a gumshield to wear at night.. the thin ones cost like £70 though and the thick ones make me gag (£30) so I just live with it.

Reply 16

I had this before my jaw was broken (ortho work not an accidental break) because I had TMJ and was grinding.

Hasn't happened since.

Worth checking with your dentist

I've had the same thing - TMJ is the joint and I had TMJ dysfucntion syndrome. Again, for me, it was because I grind my teeth at night - I used to have problems particularly after eating chewy cereal (like Country Crisp!) or anything else that requires more jaw-work than normal.

i have clicky jaw, it started as an occasional on hte right side which would lock if i laughed whilst eating, (very painful).

Now it clicks almost everytime i move my jaw and most of the time on the left hand too.

I saw a specialist at hospital she took x-rays and said theres not a lot they can do, except surgery but they very rarely do that unless it physcically locks on a daily basis, other than that it will either go away or not change.

Sucky! cos it feels like its gettin worse :frown:
