scared of going crazy

Im scared of being out and then all of a sudden not knowing where I am, not knowing if its real and panicking. I have rugby training tonight and am scared of it happening and showing myself up. Its likely as im not on drink and drugs but im anxious how can I make myself think straight? If I have a panic attack it seems like nothing is real. Does anyone else get paranoid over this?

I don't get paranoid over things like this, but i can understand why it would feel alarming.
If you are having panic attacks and feeling very unsettled about it, I think maybe you should go and see your doctor.

Has this been going on for a long time?

Yeah, the feeling that nothing is real, and what is happening isn't really happening is called Depersonalisation and it's linked to anxiety. Don't worry, everyone who has Depersonalisation (and many people who have anxiety) worry they're going to go insane. I didn't know the feeling of unreality was linked to anxiety for ages and thought I was going completely nuts.

I know it's really scary but it is very possible to get over it gradually by ignoring it. It's easy to say and hard to do, but whenever you feel unreal tell yourself you're not going to lose control of yourself and that this is just an irrational pattern of thinking you have got into - it's reversible and it can't possibly hurt you. Takes a long time to correct the thought pattern but gets easier as you go along.

This forum should give you more information: http://www.dpselfhelp.com/forum You can PM me if you want, I know how scary it is. Thought I'd never feel normal again a year or so ago and now I'm mostly okay.

just remember when you get in this state that everything is "real" and there is no need to be alarmed.
