Edexcel Chemistry Unit 2 (C2) - 14th June 2017 Discussion

Poll

How did you find the exam?

How did everyone find the Edexcel C2 exam today?

I think overall it wasn't that bad, a majority of questions were repeated from past papers, although that first 6 marker wasn't great for me.

Also, for the potassium and water reaction, I put:

2K + 2 H2O β†’ 2KOH + H2

Did anyone else get the same?

it's an isotope
isotopes explained
2 extra neutrons in neon 22
20.2 is closer to 20 than 22 because neon 20 is more abundant ( 90% )

the relative atomic mass formula

relative abundance of isotope 1 x its mass + relative abundance of isotope 2 x its mass divided by 100

the calculation:

90 x 20 + 10 x 22 / 100
= 20.2

for the average atomic masses of the isotope leaving a relative atomic mass of 20.2

that's what I remember writing off the top of my head. I wrote more I just can't remember.
Same! Does anyone have the unofficial mark scheme or the questions?

I got that too

Any help in putting together this unofficial markscheme would be appreciated
has anyone got an unofficial mark scheme??

What about the mass of magnesium maths question, pretty sure the answer was 31.8?

I got 31.8 as well

I believe the question was about neon-20 (90% of sample) and neon-22 isotopes (10% of sample), which have a relative atomic mass of 20.2 and the structure of neon-22.

So I think mark scheme will be looking for comments made about them being isotopes, and neon-22 having 10 protons, 12 neutrons (2 more than neon-20) and 10 electrons. Also, as they were looking for comments on structure, you probably could've mentioned the electronic structure (2.8) and that the full shell made it a noble gas.

To explain the 20.2 relative atomic mass, I just used the calculation to work out relative atomic mass, which was something like:

(90*20) + (10*22)/100
Im thinking i got like 55/60

I wrote the same as well

You had to put state symbols as well as it was a 3 marker

(S) was the state symbol?
That was insanely easy, I'd be surprised if I didn't get 60/60
