Depends. I have really rather too much money, because I'm on millions of bursaries and grants and stuff, but there's loads of people I know who are... I wouldn't say struggling, but having to budget a lot. Still, when you're a student you're stingy and make sure everything's as close as possible to free anyway, so if you're a bit of a heavy spender, you'll very soon get out of that habit.

So how much money you have depends on how much money you get off the government, parents, savings and so on. You can live (not extravagantly, but just about comfortably) off a maintenance loan, but it's not much fun; still, it can be done.

Even if you only get the minimum loans you can still survive well if you get a part time job.

Indeed, I wasn't taking that into account; some unis don't allow you to get a part time job. (Actually, Cambridge is the only one I've heard of that does that, but I'm obviously biased because I've never looked into all 100-odd unis; anyway, Cambridge has loads of hardship funds if you need them and I imagine most such unis would be the same.)

at the moment i have not got as much money to spend compare to when i started i am down to 150 pounds to last me for the next 1 month and 15 days oops.

should not really go out so much and learn to budget.

Budgeting is the key to maintaining cash flow.

But i have a job which i am going to get paid 200 pounds so i be happy when thats in my account.

Money is not something to worry about, just think smart when you are spending it! For example if you was to drink alcohol before going out buy from a shop is cheaper than getting bottles from the bar.

Everyone is in the same boat ... trying to spend as little as possible. It's perfectly manageable to live on the grants/bursaries etc, especially if you get a part time job.

Yes and then there are all the EU students who get nothing from either government. I basically have money until December, and then afterwards I will be screwed. I am not considering dropping out, but basically all three countries (Denmark, country of citizenship+birth, Sweden country of residence, and the UK) have turned their back on me. Yes, I'll probably be neg repped for this post by some moron arguing that I should get a job. Well, newsflash, Oxford doesn't allow you to work. Where I come from it's practically impossible to get a job.

hmmm... I would say that the only reason I manage is because I budget really well - and have 2 bank accounts so that I have some back-up in case of an emergency.
I use my card only for grocery shopping and withdraw cash for other things so that I have a better hold of where my money is going.

I'd say I do know some students who brag that they are way into their overdraft --- this is when the semester is about 3 weeks in mind you! --- but then they truly don't know how to spend their money, they'd buy drinks and go clubbing, but when it comes to things like groceries and essential books for their course they'd try to avoid it - really speaking you need to sort out your priorities, then you avoid the overdraft disaster and bankruptcy.

I am poor.......and now have to spend £50 on buying new keys :bawling:

new keys? - aahh... I'm guessing it's halls?

Well financially I'm well off. GRants and maintenance loans and no part time job, I spend £30per day. Beat that.

I'm not doing too well this term as I bought a DSLR out of my savings and have spent a fortune at the RSC (do have front row seats for David Tennants Hamlet ) My degree doesn't afford me much time for a job but I work at an Arts Centre and get £5 for each shift (and save money on not having to pay to see stuff)so I keep that aside, hopefully at the end of term I will have money for something fun.

man I wish I was in your shoes :frown:
not complaining or anything, but I wish that international students had some scholarships and stuff available for them.

I get the maximum loan, and a £1000 bursary.

I manage to look after myself, though I don't spend much myself, £10/£20 maximum per week.

I also pretty much support someone else as well, who spends MUCH more than me.

So yeh, I'd say I'm not poor at all, and if I wasn't supporting another person, I'd consider myself very rich.

Yup. Their squeezing £400 out of my bank as it is....I cant actually afford £50, but i dont really have a choice.

I hate it when those types of things happen - that reminds me of when I got on a train without my railcard and was fined.. so really I paid about 60 pound to get to london ONLY. Really crappy.. coz I had to get back and I came with my dad.. another dent as I was still railcard-less.

some students have it so easy with the bursaries and loans, a freind of mine can afford to waste £90 on dvd's at random and still have money - he eats pizza most nights a week, and spends obscene amounts on drinks (weather it's a lie or not, he's said he's spend £60 - 100 a few nights) and his family isnt particularly well off at all..

Then I see some who are spoilt by parents who pay for accomodation allowing students to keep their loans.. Some I know really do struggle though, and either work weekends, or have jobs in the summer..

I think it's a myth. Although had I been at uni this time last year I probally wouldn't be saying that, lol, change of circumstances you see  I'm spending about £100 per week but have £125 budgeted. Though, I don't have enough to buy clothes as I would like to know.

my student loan, £3300ish, just about pays for my rent, and i get the same again from my parents but spread across the year and im doing fine, not anywhere near my overdraft and last year had enough left over to get an xbox 360. i am known by my mates for being tight though and i budget really carefully and dont waste it on stuff i dont need (other than the xbox) downloading a lot helps save money, cough
