Sainsburys - terrible pay rates

I'm 16, have been working at checkouts in Sainsburys for a month now.

At first I didn't enjoy the job, now it's not so bad cos of the people I work with - excellent banter!

The downside? The Payyyyy!!!

Sainsburys pay under 18s £4.37 per hour  .. and it only goes up to £4.55 :s-smilie: .. it's shocking (considering how well Sainsburys do and what other supermarkets offer)...

What's even worse is that Sainsburys have scrapped all staff premiums (eg time and a half, double time) for all new staff... which basically means that there are other workers that will get extra cash for working bank holidays or doing sunday shifts, but i will get 4.37 per hour no matter what day I work.

I hope sainsburys change this soon ... it really isn't fair.

work at asda pay= £5.88 an hour!

The national minimum wage for under 18s is £3.40. I know plenty of people who work for that, so count yourself lucky. Sure, it's **** when you turn 18, but you're one who wants the job.

£4.37 isn't all that bad for a 16 year old, 8 hour day = £35, quite a lot if you have no financial commitments.

i think pay should be equal, like in asda for example,
they have got rid of age discrimination, and pay every worker the same!
you will have fiancial commitments, when it comes to saving up for university! the fee's for uni are still way too much!!
seriously asda is the best place for students, you can gain study leave when you need it, the pays ace, they give under 18's longer breaks, and generally VERYYY NICEEE PLACE...and environmen=]]

I disagree. My branch of Tesco pay their under 18s £5.60 and their over 18s £6.80. If they were to give everyone equal pay, you just know it wouldn't be the higher rate.

Any supermarket will give you what ASDA give you. Tesco do all of the things you mentioned, as do quite a few other places. Generally speaking, although people turn their noses up, supermarkets are the best place to work.

Agree. Everyone does the same work as each other, no matter what age

Boots is quite good for pay. I get £5.65 an hour, and the under 18s get £4.85. They pay time and a half for any hours over 37.5 (only useful for full-timers like me I guess) and on Sundays - so overtime on Sundays is great haha!

Yeah, I will be going back to work at sainsburys with none of the previous benefits I had before, and on probationary rate. I was on close to a a tenner an hour on Sundays!!! It sucks, but you get loads of holiday at sainsburys, more than anywhere else I know! And when you turn 18, it really will go up
And, TBH, before I turned 18 I was being paid about the same rate an hour as the people working fulltime who were being taxed.

Age discrimination legislation, unfortunately, seems to have only been designed as a vote winner for the older population. There's nothing wrong with paying more experienced workers more, but when two people of different ages can start the same job at the same time, but get different wages, something is wrong...

Anyway, supermarkets are never good places for pay, im on £5... well 5 something an hour, not that much. I'm not sure about whether or not they should be able to stop staff premiums only for new staff... seems counter productive to me anyway, as new staff wouldn't want to take on extra hours if they are needed.

haha, how contradictory. It's discriminative to pay differently according to age, but not so to give different breaks?

i am not bothered, it works in my favour, and it will continue for all under 18's!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:!! its ace!!!

people work at your local asda!:P

I think it may be your region or store, because I started on 4.76 last December and i'm currently on 5.35 and i'm under 18 (well only for 3 more weeks anyway) and that goes up to about 7.95 on a Sunday. Either they have been really nasty to new recruits or your personnel people are just really stingy/harsh.

no, really. How can you complain about discrimination and then advocate it? You can't change your mind suddenly when something works in your favour.
