Chemistry Tutor...

Hiya,
I was just wondering what everyones opinions were on me geting a Chemistry tutor to help raise my grades through into A2?

The main reason being, is that I want to improve my AS low C grade up to a B grade.

I would just like your opinions, on whether you think that is a good idea or not...
Have any of you had tutors before? Were they useful? Did it help you do better in the subject?

Thanks!

A tutor may benefit you by going through exam questions and exam content so it's very possible they could help you imrove your grades.
I had a biology tutor for AS and he certainly did help me however I got a C in biology (although I did know the answers to almost the entire exam paper which is why I'm looking into this paper considering remarking). I have to say that without the tuition I would have not known parts of the course due to lack of teaching and poor resources for revision.
However if you feel you could get more help from your teachers and review the chemistry material yourself you may save yourself some money. If you don't understand particular areas of the course it may be good to ask your teacher to go through it with you.

Its just that one of my chemistry teachers just isnt good at explaining, and another is good at explaining. So half of the course I fully understand, and the other half isnt so great. My inorganic teacher last year gives us the worst notes, so when it comes to revising, I am like, 'what the hell did that mean??'

Thats why I was thinking, 1 on 1 with a personal tutor might help.

Anyone else have an idea as to what I should do? Because I would rather take the risk and get a tutor rather than not get one, and at the end of it think... 'if I did get a tutor, my end grade could have been what I needed to get into Pharmacy'...

Do tutors actually help understanding of the subject? Because thats what I really need, someone to help me understand those bits, that my teachers couldnt get across, because they were teaching a class of 30...

So what I am basically saying is... are tutors beneficial? Or shouldnt I bother?

Do any of you guys think that it is a benificial thing to get a tutor? Has anyone had experience of tutors themselves? Was it good?

I would greatly appreciate as many opinions as possible, as this will cost money...

Thanx.

Ok well firstly what were you AS modular marks?

If you got say good Bs but a D/E on another paper to bring your grade down then consider retaking papers.

Btw, what's your exam board?

Also is there any chance you might get a different teacher this year?

No chance of a different teacher I am afraid.. Reason being, there are only 2 chem teachers at our school, we are getting a new one next year, so I could get lucky!!!

I think I got CCD... I have figured out, that to go up to a B, I will have to retake two units....

It turns out that I need to gain about 33 marks in order to go up to a B... Approx. 16 extra UMS in two units to get me to a B...

Okay, here we go:
Chem 1: 47/90 D
Chem 2: 54/90 C
Chem 3: 77/120 C

having a tutor can be a good or a bad thing. the important thing is to be proactive about your lessons with a tutor, thereby gaining the most from your time and money!

i would suggest firstly asking friends if they would recommend a particular tutor. alternatively, try specific tutorial colleges or the yellow pages. once you have a shortlist of a few names, book an appointment to go and see them since there are so many bogus/rubbish tutors out there! it is important to make sure that they are familiar with your course and the board you are doing. no point them teaching you edexcel when you need ocr! preferably get a tutor which is currently teaching your EXACT syllabus and has past papers and answers. i've found that with a-levels, the course material itself is not that difficult, rather the key is in exam technique and answering the question.

you've also got to remember that the onus is on you to do the relevant work in between tutorials and not to rely completely on the tutor. i know so many people that have fallen into the trap of 'i've got a tutor therefore i will get an a without doing any work in my own time'.

i think that it's also important to 'lead' your own tutorials. rather than saying something like, 'i want to learn about genetics', tell your tutor your exact difficulties and get him/her to go through any problems that you have had with past papers etc.

a level tuition is quite expensive, in the london area, it ranges from £30-45 an HOUR, so it's definitely worthwhile investigating the best possible tutor!

if you have any further questions, PM me. Hope that helps!
