Spanish Study/Year Abroad

I'm thinking of studying a joint honours in Geography and Spanish at Leeds Uni. If I do this course I will have to do a year abroad. Please could people give me their experiences of studying abroad or any general advice and maybe answer some of the following questions:

Where is best to go in Spain?
How many times did you come home during the year and how many opportunities to come home are there?
How much did the year abroad improve your Spanish?
Is it cheaper being in Spain than the U.K.?
Did you get a part time job?
How did you make new friends and do you have any tips?
