Because the vast majority are sheep and can't think for themselves.

Because although UKIP themselves aren't a racist party, they attract a lot of racist followers.

yeah, for supporting UKIP in the past I have been accused of being racist, told it's a horrible party that doesn't like immigrants etc. But when you try reason and explain some of their other policies except immigration whoever you talk to their brain seems to shut off and ignore anthing you say, as if they have it ingrained without having any knowledge of the party.

I agree with your your point, but UKIP isn't fringe politics, it's fact the vast majority want more control in relation to our borders, the majority wanted Brexit, the majority want HS2 to be scrapped. I feel it's more the stigma associated with party has result in people forming an uneducated opinion of the party.

If UKIP have policies beyond excessive restrictions on UK borders, then their leaders have consecutively and consistently failed to publicise them. Even in debates, they've always tried to focus on immigration.

Their politicians and members also keep on getting recorded making racist or sexist comments, and some of their members have been photographed doing stuff like nazi salutes.

The combination of these two things seems to have got them a reputation for encouraging xenophobic or racist behaviour. That's why some people claim to hate UKIP.

It's fringe in terms of what's "socially acceptable". I don't think the stigma is due solely to misinformation however. I think while UKIP do to an extent dabble in social populism, the extent to which they peruse it is more extreme then what your average person wants. And their economic views are very out of touch with your average person.
