When reading, one could make several comparisons between Machiavelli's suggestions as to how a leader should lead a country, and the realism school of thought in political theory - which has greatly influenced the political actions of certain countries. This is one of the largest ways the book maintains its relevance.

As for simply contemporary society, Machiavelli encourages leaders to not rely on others, and to prioritize the state, which can be translated to feelings citizens have regarding protecting their property and work ethic.
