simple question, which film/series is best and why?

TV series: Game of Thrones- Good adaption of excellent books. Well acted and good production values

Films Lord of the Rings Trilogy for all the above reasons and it is closeish to the books.

Film: Pans Labyrinth- perfect and original.

I'm glad if you like Pans Labyrinth. the other two are predictable, but good nonetheless. I dont think there has been that much good quality fantasy because it requires money to pay actors plus the CGI has gotten really good these days. Sci Fi is different and cheaper to achieve a believable world.

I like del Toro in general even though The Devil's Backbone scared the **** out of me.

I think it just takes a higher level of detail and have to try and avoid all the common tropes trotted out over the years. It is certainly difficult to do high fantasy that isn't LoTR or GoT and make it stand out.
