student with child

I am currently in my second year of college and looking to go to university. I have a 2 1/2 year old child. I really want to move away from the place where i live now and out of Bristol as i am really unhappy here. Does any one know if universities can find places for single parents? Also, has anyone else moved away from home with their child to study and how easy did you find it?

Do you currently live at home with your parents?
I'm not in your situation, but I think your best option is to phone around and ask university admission tutors about your options. Choose your universities by their academic reputation obviously, but also where you think you'll be happy.
I think Imperial College does have accommodation for students with a family of their own, but I don't know who qualifies for what support and accommodation exactly. You should be able to find suitable accommodation in the private sector though. What you should worry most about is their kindergarten/child care programme. If they have a good one, how much it costs, can you afford that, are you garanteed a place etc?
At the one at my uni I know for example that they put you on a waiting list, it's expensive and you aren't guarnteed one. So that would not suit your needs at all.

I go to Hull university and they have a good nursery there! There's no reason why you shouldn't go to uni and better yourself etc. I know a few people who have kids and manage to do a full time course here! Good luck.

Have you consider the open university? You could still move and there is loads of financial support available, if on benefits you wouldn't have to pay a thing.

i thought of that but i would rather put in the hard work. Im not bothered about paying my way, but would obviously need some help with childcare, course costs etc.

Do you still live at home or rent?
If you are a full time student, when you apply for your student loan, at the same time you can apply for financial help with childcare costs. I think it's around 80% of the costs that they pay for you.

Getting the actual coursework and essays done with a young child is difficult but doable. Course as a single parent it'll be even more difficult for you, but I'm quite convinced it can be done. You'll have time when your child is napping, or after they have settled down to sleep for the night, that sort of thing.

Best of luck

If you live in a council or housing assoiciation house then you could exchange and I'm sure you still get housing benefits.

Swansea uni has accomodation known as Ty Beck (i think) and hey offer accomodation for students with families. It's a quieter area too.
