Classics at Warwick

I've had an offer to study Classical Civilisation in 2008. I've read up a lot on the Classics department and have (briefly) visited the Humanities building. Unfortunately I have only seen the University fleetingly, not on an open day, and when I had very little time.

So- your experience of the Classics department would be useful, and also I'd love to hear from anyone else applying for a Classical subject this year!

I don't know anything about the department, but I thought I'd write this message to say well done on choosing classics - far too few people do and it's a real shame.

I'm thinking very carefully about it, I've only looked at Warwick briefly, but it's a veryvery good Uni, obv. However, I don't like the course quite as much as Royal Holloway. I'll be paying attention very intently on the visit day  But it comes down to Warwick or RH for me for firm.

What about you? Where does it rank, have you seen it/what did you think?

I haven't seen it, so i'm very curious to visit.
I think it would be either first or insurance because it's a really good uni.
It's also nearer my boyfriend's uni (although none of them really are lol).
and I was very excited to get an offer based on Warwick's reputation.
However, i'll obviously have to go and see... ahh
I just got an offer from Exeter as well, which i loved when i visited it.
I wanted to go to Bristol but am yet to hear from them...

I live very near there so would be easiest.
Where do u live? What's the course like then?. i really am quite clueless!

I'm going to an open day on the 20th February and if I like it it's gonna be me first choice. I've heard it's a really good place. The guy who works in the betting shop round the corner from me studies there so am going to go talk to him.
So whatever he says I'll report back to here!

I live in Leicester, so it's about 45 mins away, convenient but ideally I had wanted to be a bit further away from home.

The course, well, you'll have to decide yourself, take a look at the website. I think it's perhaps a bit limited in the first year- 2 compulsory modules and you only do 4 modules per year, so you only get 2 choices in first year. However, I've got a friend who's doing Classics and who says it's FAB, she's in her first year.

So yeah- those 2 factors put me off a bit, plus I've got my heart set on RH because of the course and campus. So when I go there it has to be realllly good  But equally I am concious Warwick is a vair good Uni in terms of reputation, so am reallllly stuck :frown:

Help anyone!?

I have no idea how Clearling works (I prob should buff up on it before results day :s-smilie: ) but my instinct would say a Uni such as Warwick wouldn't need to go through cleaing. I may well be being all snobbish and wrong...also, I should imagine it varies year on year, if they drastically undershoot with few people taking up offers then they may, but that's no indicator for the next year neccessarily.

thats what i thought to be honest elanor but she's a bit under the asking points already so dont want to depress her anymore, perhaps i should just tell he to bite the bullet and to ring and ask because i couldnt find anything on their website or find any clearing lists anywhere for warwick.

I take it from how you're speaking she's applied and has been unsuccesful? It's definitely worth ringing or emailing the admissions department, I can't imagine it's a terribly in demand degree. As far as they'll be concerned any interest in their university is good. Has she got her heart set on Warwick then?

no she hasnt applied yet she's been a bit undecided, but now it seems she has her heart set on warwick. Will pass on your advice about ringing admissions, thanks again

What are her AS's/predicted grades? I got in for Classical Studies with ABC at AS for an ABB offer offer- just because you're under the offer it doesn't neccessarily mean you're going to get told to bugger off :P The fact she's worrying about it and even looking at clearing this early clearly shows she wants to apply to Warwick, so she should! You never get anywhere on ifs and buts. As long as you've got a couple of other places with more achievable typical offers you're laughing!

Shes on a gap year like me, and she got BCC it sounds a really interesting course but she's never even done italian or classics, yet has a great interest in them- our college never did them. Congratulations on your offer by the way

Thank you

It might be worth contacting admissions as I said and asking maybe to have a word with either of the departments on the phone about it? Or fix up a meeting. I'm not sure what the typical offer combined with Italian is, but for pure Classical Civilisation it's ABB/BBB so she's really not a million miles away. I'm sure if she was to stress her passion for these subjects/lack of oppertunity to do them before now they would give her some attention.
