C4 Natural Logs

How do you know where to use the modulus inside the natural logs?
I was doing an integration question, where I had to use them to get an answer, but at times where you have to solve an equation, where e^x=-3 or something, you don't get an answer/don't consider the solution.
Thanks in advance

When you integrate 1/x or something similar, always use ln|x|.

All the best
