I'd have to be pretty ill to stay home from work. I need the money too much.

I must admit I was expecting everyone to say "Don't be a pussy, you should just stick it out" :s-smilie:

I probably have the onset of a cold (my ears hurt and thats always a sign) but it isn't full blown yet. To be honest even I think I'm being a bit of a whinger considering not coming in.

I don't work with food either, so that isn't a concern. But its interesting to see how attitudes vary on how sick is too sick to work.

I have called in sick for work tonight. Been feeling a bit ill for a couple of days, bit of a cold and eye infection. Woke up this morning with nasty sore throat and swollen glands so decided it would be best not to go in. I work as a steward in an arts centre and I don't think that I'd be providing the best image of the arts centre with a yucky gunk filled eye thats probably infectious and an ill sounding voice when I should be greeting eveyone. I wanted to work tonight too as its a play I really want too see.

I take the day of work for a virus but not a cold.
I had severe tonsillitus the other month and only stayed off because my mum forced me too.

When its school though, I'm not too fussed (I'm not getting paid and I can usually catch up).

A lot. Serious nausea or feeling like I'm about to faint, nothing less than that.

I once went into school with borderline appendicitis. Illness is a weakness damnit! I do not succumb to it!

It's quite terrible that I wouldn't think twice about skipping lectures if I felt a bit iffy but it would take a lot to ring in sick at work. I need to get my priorities right... :s-smilie:

Alot lol, ive had a few jobs temp and part time over the last 4 years or so, and have NEVER called in sick. Ive gone in when serverely hungover, had a fever and all sorts of other small things.

If you have a male boss, tell him it's 'girl problems'. He'll run a mile. :p:

not if hes a manager worth his salt. In which case you get told, take some painkillers and come in, you have this every month for 40 odd years - deal with it. Its what we used to tell people when they had that poor excuse.

OP if you feel that you cannot work do not go in. If your ill do not go in - take the day to rest. If you feel that you can work though then you should go in

I've never missed a day off work but then I don't get sick very often. I miss lectures all the time though because of hangovers, tiredness, you name it. There are some annoying people who work at my place who ring in sick maybe 2 or 3 times per week and leave us up **** creek because we are short staffed. At least if I don't go to lectures the only one i'm screwing over is myself

Nothing would stop me from working...I like earning money!

People get colds all the time and most people will know how to deal with one. Sure, you can feel pretty rotten with a cold but it hardly leaves you bedridden. Anyway sore throats and headaches, which OP has, are sometimes just one off things rather than a full blown cold.

Dunno, a full blown cold definitely leaves you bedridden. If you are up and about, then all you have is a dose of the snuffles. Proper cold leaves every muscle in pain, and makes you feel so tired that you'll go no where.

I know, I have had full blown colds myself, but the OP isn't talking about a full blown cold.

I had a job as a cleaner at one point (I know, **** but all I could get) and I didn't sit down for the entire time I was at work. I was constantly moving and it was very tiring. I had a bad cold during the time I was working there but refused to take time off for it, mainly because I didn't want to risk losing my days off. I've had plenty of colds, I know how to make myself feel better. What I would do is make sure I got plenty of rest out of work to make sure I felt better for the next day. As I said in another post, the only time I phoned in sick was when I had a migraine. There was no way I could in such pain. I couldn't even walk to the toilet without feeling like I was going to faint in to a pile of my own vomit.

In the past just not being bothered would be enough but since I started my job a couple of years ago it would take alot..its a big company and when your ringing in to call sick you have to leave this message stating all this crap and then when your back you have to do an RTW (return to work interview) and all absences are recorded and watched very closely :s-smilie: so all in all its just not worth it.

I did go to work. I'm still there in fact  Roll on 6 o'clock.

I guess I can get away calling in sick more because I work on my own. Plus I work on eBay, so although I can't list items or post them (them being at the garage) I can keep an eye on things and answer most questions at home if I need to. So I can keep on top of things if I'm not there. I'm not letting anyone down by not going in, or making anyone else work any harder through my absence. So the only person who would be losing out if I don't go in is me, money-wise.

Wouldnt stay off for a cold, only if I was actually being sick. I have been sent home a couple of times for almost fainting when ive had swollen glands.

How exactly did going to work rather than lying in bed make your bladder infection turn in to a kidney infection  Fair enough, lying in bed might help you to recover from a cold but I don't get the whole kidney infection thing. I'm sure I didn't get mine because I went to my lectures instead of staying in bed.

Stress depresses your immune system, while rest helps it. Often with these things just taking some time out in bed will help get rid of them, while pushing yourself to keep going when you're not up to it will result in it getting worse, leading to a need for antibiotics, which is why so many bugs have become antibiotic resistant.

This thread makes me feel really guilty for not going in this evening. I guess my health problems over the years have made me learn that if I don't listen to the early warning signals then I am not helping myself.

Bearing in mind that most of Winter is spent with a cold it would be really pathetic if I took days off for a cold.
In college at the moment and the only time I have taken days off school was when I vomitted in the morning.
Personally, i think people who take days off for colds or headaches are rather pathetic - just get on with life.

If everyone took the day off every time they felt a bit off, you know just in case, then no one would ever be in work.
