I think King's and St John's have the most famous Cambridge choirs (they certainly have the most rehearsals). I've heard of Trinity, Clare and Caius having good choirs as well. I'm sure all of them are good, but some just have a better reputation and take it more seriously than others.

Clare has a pretty decent choir. They have lots of CDs out and went touring in Japan this summer.

Jesus have got a good choir too. Sidney get all the people who can't get into the Jesus choir! Anyway, Nicky's a member of Sidney choir so it must be pretty good.

Oi! I could get into Jesus if I wanted to

Seriously, Sidney's is a choir to join if you want a laugh. Good ones (in no real order):

John's
Trinity
King's
Clare
Caius
Selwyn
Jesus male choir (the mixed choir's not so good)
Girton, apparently, though few people get to hear them!
Magdalene

There are lots of pretty good ones. The biggies are really the top 4 in my list; the most famous is King's but most of my musician friends seem to agree that the best are John's and Trinity

To get into a choir you have to have auditioned when you interviewed didn't you? I didnt have my gr8 then so I didnt bother to ask, but I'd love to be in a choir...although because my exam board wasn't ABRSM/Trinity my chances of getting in suck a bit...
what do you think?

You don't have to; some of them only do auditions after you come up. But it depends on which choir you're after and whether they have any vacancies. You don't need grades - just good sightreading ability and (obviously) a nice voice. What voice are you and what choir are you thinking of?

Um, I'm pretty sure Newnham is one of the colleges that does G2 choral awards (you audition once you're there). That means they probably accept people who didn't audition at interview, whether you're applying for a choral award or not. I thought Newnham didn't have its own chapel thoguh...they share with Selwyn or something.

Yeah, the Newnham girls sing with Selwyn generally - sorry Fluffstar, had forgotten you were off to Newnham! I'm not sure about vacancies in selwyn choir, but it's something to look at. If not, there are several choirs who take people from other colleges. It's worth asking around once you get there.

Oh and if you carry on with singing lessons you might have the same teacher as me  She teaches the Newnham and Selwyn ladies! How exciting

If you are not successful in getting a choral scholarship does this dampen your chances of getting in to study the subject you want?

One of my friends is off to Selwyn to read English this year with a choral award! (Sorry to interrupt  )

I'm a mezzo-soprano (how original) and I'm an OK sightreader thanks to the flute and school band...lol oh how we sucked...
 thanks for the help everyone - I'll ask my tutor when I get there...
 yeeeeey soo exited!!

gzftan...do you know whether you are less likely to get an academic place to the college if you are not successful in the choral competition?

Umm, sorry to butt in, but you have to be awarded a place before they will audition you, so it makes no difference whatsoever.

Nah, they audition you a couple of days before the start of term. It's the same with Instrumental Awards...I had a vague thought of applying for one if they auditioned me at interview, but then they said it would be in late September, and I knew I wouldn't do much practice over the summer, so I forgot about it.
