do press ups? I suppose if you have a bad back you won't do press ups..

but I reckon if you do A LOT of lifts with the dumbell itll be quite affective, try doing like 10 each arm 3 times.

Do really slow reps x lots and it will work your muscles. Don't think it will bulk but will certainly do your muscles some good.

Wrong Answer!

If you have a bad back you should get it checked by a physio and get it fixed first. Then consider training.

Dumbells of that weight will avail you nothing other than some meagre calories burning - you won't get bulking, conditioning or anything like this. Heavy is the way to go.

To be honest, if not your for back I'd say do pressups, situps etc. Get your back checked and ask your physio what exercises you can do

Err everyone has to start out somewhere. Not everyone can cope with 10-15kg in each hand to begin with.

No, they can't, however you completely overlooked the fact they have a back injury - one of the most debilitating injuries to have right up there with Knees injuies.

Doing dozens of reps with a light dumbell achieves nothing, you have to use a reasonable weight to strengthen, bulk or condition. But just to reiterate, BACK INJURY

Well you didn't have a go at LawYah!

I was suggesting exericses - you don't know what the OP can lift. And I was suggesting what he could do with 5Kg dumbells, as the title suggested. If you read any literarture you will find that most suggest that if you find a weight easy and can't afford heavier ones, do reps slower. So there you go.

And for a beginner doing reps with 5Kgs it will do something. Yes long term it won't bulk etc. but it didn't take a genius to figure that out now did it?

You could effectively stop a door, or stop some paper flying away in the wind.

Wrist curls? Not much, really

If you read the right literature you will find that doing slow reps doesn't actually increase the benefit you get, just tires the muscles out faster ^^

i'm sort of the same op. i've a pair of 10lb dumbbells and i just do these exercises:

http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/dumbbellexercises.html

i think it's quite effective, but i am quite skinny so it's like building any muscle at all for me lol. i think if i did it 3x a week i'd probably get some decent results after a while, not sure though, so i dont bother lol. i use them about once a month if im honest, too busy with college. but i'm sure you can achieve something. for me, i want to have stronger muscles all over, so i've just been following these exercises. i doubt i could do "deadlifts" or **** like that.

Bicep curls and tricep curls. You will be suprised how heavy 5kg feels whilst doing tricep curls after few reps lol. But dont be suprised when 5kg feels too light after few weeks. After going gym for a week (2 times a week), I try to increase the dumbbell weight by 1kg. So if I bicep curled 10kg first week, I try to curl 11kg the next. However I try to alternate my sets n reps so my body don't get used to the exercise.

Renegade rows spring to mind. It won't build great muscle with such a light weight but it should give you a bit of strength around the midsection. Front pistols are great, and will be easier with 5kg held out in front of you.

Whats a tricep curl?

Possibly more accurately called a triceps extension (unless I'm thinking of the wrong thing) http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/Triceps/DBOneArmTriExt.html

If anyone wants to add to this, I think we should have an FAQ on the subject. The 'I have no gym' question seems to come up a lot.

**** all.

You'd be better off using your own body weight (half seriously: varying grip pulls, chins, press-ups, dips, raises yada yada). I'm fairly worried by the idea of an adult male unable to lift more than a combined 10kg because of "a slightly bad lower back".

I can lift plenty more than that, you idiot, but only on weights machines. Even with a bad back I can lift in excess of 40kg for a bicep curl, although when I am using free weights, I cannot lift as much, presumably because my spine is FUBAR and I need to be sitting or leaning against something rather than standing free.

40kg each arm? You have to be pretty huge.
