Depressed - who should I go to?

Recently I've been going through a tough time having to deal with a lot of things. I think I'm depressed and its beginning to show in my relationships with others etc.

Anyway, I want to talk to a professional about it but I don't know how to get in touch with one. I can't talk to members of my family or friends because either or both of them seem to be the problem. What should I do; how do I go about getting in touch with the right person?

It seems stange to arrange an appt with my GP as I don't have a medical problem. If there is couselling available, where should I look?

Thanks.

Depression is a medical problem. See your GP.

not much point in saying it again, but go to your GP. It IS a medical problem. If you'd rather not go to your family clinic you can find a walk-in centre and speak to someone new.. either way they'll be able to put you in contact with a counselling service and tell you the different options.

If you want more advice there is a 'Depression Society' thread in the Socs forum.

Have you got a walk in health centre? At home there's a centre specifically for teens and I had counselling done there.

If you see the doctor for counselling sometimes there is a long waiting list (i was bumphed because I was a high risk) and you can only have a certain amount of sessions. I get counselling from a local charity called Share that I found through Connexions. Everywhere in the UK has Connexions so maybe go in and see them if you can't face the doctors and they can get you in contact with a charity.

also if you're at uni ask if the university has its own counseling service. Notts has its own service which is completely free for students. You do have to go on a waiting list but how long you wait depends on how 'important' they think your problem is, your year of study, the time of the year etc.

Uni of Manchester also has a free counselling service.

Goodluck with it all OP, if you ever want to chat pop me a PM

whoops forgot to say, definitely go to the Doctor's, that's what I did and I was so glad I did. I was really scared as well but in the end I couldn't put up with it any longer.. trust me getting a professional opinion helps!

When I felt like I really needed some help because depression was really affecting my life. I went to the doctors and bluntly said; "I'm depressed. What can you do for me?"

He asked me to give a little description of my feelings, &then pointed me to various different councilling service.
Some with the NHS.
Some with connexions.
Some that were in connexions with my uni.

It's not too difficult, your GP is probably your best option - unless your in your teens, then just find the connexions centre.

I hope you do something about it OP, because depression isn't something anyone should have to put up with.

Good luck!

Explain to your GP your problem and they should refer you to a counsellor. I hope this helps. Good Luck!
