The Athena Swan scheme has been in the news a lot recently with articles like this one in the TES.:

Here's a new video on the subject by the academic and writer Belinda Brown.
Is this appraisal fair or unfair. Any thoughts?

Ok, so here's the thing. It would be an uninteresting question simply to ask whether equality in the academic workplace is good, or desirable.

But Brown in her new video admits that the right to flexible working is extended to everyone, and also expected of everyone, so isn't this a good thing - that the environment becomes less of a treadmill and also more about inspiration instead of sheer hard graft?

Brown talks about the culture of academic research being eroded, but really who cares if X or Y institution comes towards the top of whatever table? Is it not more important that researchers should be happy in what they are doing?

When these are moves to improve everyone's quality of life then why should anyone seriously object?
