I have to do an essay for my first-choice uni. The assignment is essentially 'write an essay on some aspect of mathematics which interests you'. Does anyone have any good ideas?

(Some examples: a mathematician (Newton), a famous problem, something from history (where did algebra originate, who thought of using π as a symbol for pi), an application in real life (matrices and Google, Travelling Salesman) or a common misconception).

It could be literally anything. I would appreciate ANY ideas as I am finding it difficult to brainstorm an essay when I have just been focusing on exams for what feels like forever.

History of maths is usually a fun choice. If you want to go down the rabbit hole try here, the site design is old school but theres basic info on a huge number of topics and mathematicians. Particularly interesting are the entries on the development of maths in various cultures (go to History Topics from the mainpage). Hopefully it can spark some ideas.

Random thoughts:
Graph Theory is a fun topic as its so visual and you can probably explain an application pretty easily.

Bayes' Theorem is also an interesting topic which is pretty simple with modern applications.

Alice in Wonderland was actually about the absurdity of "modern" mathematics (here's an article about that). There's also a short book on that topic (which I don't remember the name of).

You might find Fermat's theorems interesting...whether you go for the history or the mathematical aspects of it you will probably have quite a lot of material to work with
