Welcome to the world of the second hand. It can;t be as bad as what my cousin did with his 3 year old escort, the machinic told him the head gasket had blown and charged him £2000 for a repair. The head gasket is simply a block that sits on top of the engine seperating the chemicals (not the rocker cover, a bit inside the engine above the camshaft). It should cost £300 at the most to repair but he paid £2000

Two months later he wrecked the engine as it had no oil it in, then told the machanic he could have the car for free.

Yep it sounds like its a head gasket problem, how did he not detect it though? Normaly if you have a blown head gasket the black smoke coming out the exhaust is a big give away. Its basicaly just a bit peice of aluminum which is designed to take a lot of heat but eventualy they crack.

This a head gasket and they are apparantly quite hard to fit

http://www.chicagolandmgclub.com/pho...gasket/415.jpg you can see uf that is cracked all the fuels and oils can mix causing a nice bang.

Lol not anymore the regulations are very strict now, diesels are dirtier but not that much. Modern ones are no different now.

PS Next time he buys a car tell him to take a machanic with him

I guess it could have been worse, my dad bought an escort for £1800 which was checked by a few people. The engine was fine etc but the prevous owner took it to Quickfit to get the breaks fixed, it turned out they caused damage to them, my dad had to pay £400 for an entire rear end rebuild just to pass the MOT.
