Depression, uni and diagnosis?

Erm, I'm starting to think I'm depressed:frown:

And well the problem is that im seriously starting to doubt being at uni, BUT I don't know whether this is my actual logical feeling or just because of the down time that I'm having at the mo.
I'm really worried that I'm going to drop out of uni but then start feeling mentalling better and realise what a stupid mistake i've made

Sooooooo my thoughts at the mo are that I go and see a doctor on campus to see if i am depressed or not. My question (finally:rolleyes: ) is how would I actually try to ask the doctor to see if i am depressed?
Is there a test they do or will I just have to pour out my feelings? Because if they ask me to say how i feel then i'll just say 'I feel normal' becuase I do feel normal, but my normal is quite depressed, oh even I'm confused now!

Just, basically, how do these doctor/depression exchanges tend to go?

thanks:smile:

The doctor on campus im sure as seen many people like you, so I would just say what brings you down and what makes you depressed.

Just tell him your problems

tell him your feelings about uni and that you feel down alot of the time.. he may ask you questions or give you a tick sheet. the other thing to do is print off a 'depression test' (search in google), fill in the answers and show him.

Just be open and completely honest with him.

I saw my GP last year about depression, he was very helpful and I eventually got medical leave of absence and am resitting my year. Don't be afraid to speak to your GP and if it comes to deferring your studies I'm sure your department will be most sympathetic provided you can get a doctors note.

Don't forget most unis offer counselling and support for these scenarios, so see what they can do for you.

Depression is a state of the mind. Nothing else. To overcome it you need to get out there and get active. Try new things, meet new people, have something to look forward to.

I'm guessing you've never actually felt depressed then?

bull****. clinical depression often has a lot of physical symptoms, some of which can make 'getting out there' and 'getting active' bloody difficult. not to mention that having something to look forward to won't make the blindest bit of difference in a lot of cases if you don't get some form of treatment.
you clearly have no idea what you're talking about do you?

when youre depressed it doesnt matter what youve got to look forward too.. it all seems pointless and worthless. Getting active outdoors DOES help, but this is far more than a state of mind. i learnt that the hard way...

And how do you know this, my friend? Have you ever experienced this 'state of mind' as you call it? If it was as easy as getting active, trying new things and meeting new people then I would have been better a long time ago. Depression isn't as straight forward as you think and I hope to God that you never have it.

When i went to the doctors about my depression, i simply told her how upset i have been feeling, that i used to want to end my life, and how i had no motivation to go to college, see my family etcetera

She asked me a number of questions, and did a sort of quiz thing that went along the lines of

How many times do you feel your life is worthless, a week?

Never

One to Two times

Three to Five times

All the time

etcetera etcetera

And then, how often are you unable to sleep?

Never

One to Two times

Three to Five times

All the time

Good luck!!

I have done all of the above, and am still depressed

Although i appreciate your opinion, before i was depressed i thought it was just "being upset" and you can get over it over night

Thanks everyone (well, most people:rolleyes: ) for being helpful. I have to wait until next week to get an appointment as they are fully booked at the mo, but I'm less nervous now, so thanks everyone:smile:
