Yes, grad prospects is probably the most important factor. I suppose it is probably seen as more 'relevant' than other more technical or more artsy subjects.

If you want to be really cynical about it you could say that economics popular because it allows people to gain a well-respected and quantitative degree, and so avoiding more demanding and intense physics and maths courses.

ah thanks for that, so an economics graduate has a good chance of entering the finance sector?

From a good institution, a graduate from a good uni with a 2.1 or above has a good chance of entering the Finance sector.

Please bear with me, I have no clue on how stuff works in the UK.
I'm assuming the entry requirements are high due to a high rate of applicants. But why so?
Are graduate prospects for economics really high?

Duh - it's all about the supply and demand

And yeah prospects are good

Yes, quite clear that you've never done economics in your life.

OWNED. Maybe he's talking about the intense work which is 'avoided' in Economics degrees? o_O

I'm still not sure what was wrong with that I said.

Math and Econ both very differnt subjects at uni. Both hard in different ways. Maths requries lots of hard deduction logic. Economics demands lots of different skills but in smaller doses.

If you're going to study economics, you should understand that offers are so high because of basic demand and supply.
