Very important in A level essay subjects such as English, because it helps you know what you are doing or supposed to do in an essay

Well if you're taking English Lit at A-Level then they are quite important.
For English Lit, the assessment objectives are different for each exam.
For Drama (Exam 1), the Assessment Objectives are A01 (terminology), A02 (meaning), A03 (context), and A05 (critical interpretations).
For Prose (Exam 2), the Assessment Objectives are A01 (terminology), A02 (meaning), A03 (context), and A04 (comparing texts).
For Poetry (Exam 3), the Assessment Objectives are A01 (terminology), A02 (meaning), A03 (context) and A04 (comparing texts).
As you can see, the assessment objectives are all you're marked on for English along with being able to write clearly and fluently. To get a high grade, you need to be able to balance the assessment objectives equally in the exams.
