my wisdom teeth go into a huge bump when part of the tooth is about to cut through, takes about 2 weeks per tiny section of the tooth. all i can say is get used to the pain. i tried taking different painkillers and getting totally drunk so i wouldnt feel it..and it still hurt like ****. i agree no wonder babies cry all the time. i've cried myself at the pain of wisdom teeth. its a year and a half since i started getting my wisdom teeth and they are still only halfway through.

Aye but it doesn't hurt the entire time, just in periods which for me are fortnights of intense pain, then maybe 5 months of not feeling anything. Just make sure you keep your wisdoms clean even when they are swollen are sore because they get really easily infected when they are only partially cut through.

I sympathise. I'm getting one at the mo and it bloody hurts! I'm using baby teething gel to ease the pain a bit, because all adult 'sore mouth gel' such as Bonjela tastes like aniseed or liquorice, which is just yuk. Poor babies; it's probably a really good thing we can't remember!

My first started coming through about a month ago but it's stopped now and it's only about a fifth of the way through. I don't want to have to go through this for a year.

whats the gel? does it work? argh i cant ake it! i had a dentist check up the other week, then the week after that was wen the damn thing started coming out! haha the irony.
I dunno if I'm weird or not, but mine have been growing in little 'spurts' for like years. One on the bottom broke through at the start of this year, yet not much has come through. And just recently the other one broke through. But i only get pain at random times over long periods of time :s-smilie:

yup mine have been coming through for going up three years. they started coming through when i still had braces on so pressing against my brace caused that to hurt even more too! two tops ones are through just about fully but my bottom two are still on their way.

anyway, back to the point. all i can really say is that it won't ALWAYS be that painful. like others have said, it comes and it goes. If it's really painful though i'd suggest an appointment with your dentist as you may have the same problem as me with one and it's growing at a funny angle. He may suggest removing it, but i've heard thats more painful than the actual growing. Still got my funny one. It's not AS painful anymore though.

good luck,

It hurts, but not for the whole 4 years of teething (it's stopped hurting for me at least). You're just going to have to bite the bullet I'm afraid.

Mine have been coming through for literally years, but I find as long as I keep them really clean they don't hurt too much. It seems like when I'm making sure they're crazy clean they're only uncomfortable for a day or two at a time, but if I'm not careful enough they'll go insane for weeks on end. It will come and go, though.

You can get Bonjela Cool now, which is probably stronger than baby teething gel, and tastes of mint, not aniseed.

Been hurting me for weeks now :P

ibuprofen, paracetamol dont work. Alcohol its still there just doesn't bother you as much :P

Things ive found that actually work:
Bonjela - removes the pain but wears off after 30 mins.
Salt water mouthwash - Teaspoon of salt mixed with warm water - Tastes horrible but stops the pain.

Bonjela is good (in my experience). I also keep get infections from mine (chewed a 'hole' in my cheek), so find cordosyl gel really useful too (2 years and counting).

I'd also recommend cloves (or clove oil)- they really numb the mouth well and are good for pain relief needed for tooth ache or ulcers

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten about that. It smells really wierd though! Someone wasn't in their lecture this afternoon...
i thought my back top gum felt strange a few months ago and when i pressed it i could feel something under it lol...a wisdom tooth but mine didnt really hurt and its now fully through even though its quite small n only took a few months
My dentist told me it looked like mine had stopped before they started, but they're starting to poke up now. This thread's given me a lot to look forward to, I'm sure :|

For ibuprofen to be its most effective, it's important you take it regularly throughout the day: once when you get up; once at bed time; and once half-way between the two. Don't wait for it to hurt first - it doesn't work as well then.

Second, if you need extra pain relief, try adding paracetamol and codeine (sold as co-codamol) as necessary. It's the codeine that does the trick - straight paracetamol, in my experience, didn't shift it. With these, do wait for it to get bad, and only take as needed.

As always, read the labels: in particular, don't take both co-codamol and straight paracetamol as you'd be overdosing which is obviously a bad thing....
