Lifers can be released on parole. I guess your question should be "Why is the death penalty worse than a life sentence without parole?"

I suppose it's more of an ethical issue about whether the Government should have the right to murder people (although to be honest, being locked up for life is just as bad). Or the issue that if someone is later found to be innocent and they got a life sentence they could be released, but if they got a death sentence, it would be too late; an innocent person would have been killed. Also, in the USA, I've heard many times that carrying out the death penalty requires so much paperwork and legal stuff that it's sometimes cheaper to keep them in prison for life.
