Uni of Aberdeen vs Queen's Uni Belfast?

(I am asking this on behalf of my brother)

I underperformed unexpectedly in my IB and got 30 points overall, 5 5 4 in physics chem and maths HL and 6 5 5 in french, economics and english. In clearing right now. Uni of Aberdeen seems mostly likely to accept me based on talking to them, and I think QUB has lower reqs and so will be likely to accept me. I am applying for chemical engineering. Is it better to go to one of these unis rather than take a gap year and resit + reapply, and if so which uni is recommended for my course? Thanks
Anyone?

If you can get on an accredited course without resiting then that's what you should do.

I'm not specifically familiar with either engineering departments but both are good universities.

Aberdeen obviously has a strong connection with O&G. And Belfast has an industrial heritage.

Thank you, does the fact that one is RG while the other isn't very important or not really?

Currently doing Chemistry in the same department as Chem.Eng at QUB. I think the department is one of the most underrated and overlooked in the UK. Simply because it's across the water. Imo It's easily on par with TCD, Edinburgh and Warwick. Note: I visited those when I was choosing my university.

I have friends in Chem.Eng who seem to be enjoying their course and the lecturers are some of the best in their fields. The department is ring shaped with around 20-30 research and teaching labs, 3 large lecture theatres, a cafe/hub, a open courtyard with seats and lots of tutorial/seminar rooms. The department has sent people to Stanford university, other UK universities, BP, Shell, the golden triangle and Pharmaceutical companies like Almac, Randox and Norbrook (all are in Northern Ireland)

I have written about my Chemistry QUB experience in a link on my profile. For me 1st year QUB has been a blast.

The campus is really nice. Modern but it has a 'Traditional' Character about it. Lots of shops, a fantastic library (with 3 floors, loads of computers and a cafe) and lots of open spaces to relax e.g David Keir Building Courtyard/Hub, Botanic Gardens, Lanyon courtyard, Student Union etc

Queens is a great university. If you have any questions about it, feel free to to pm me.

Aye the Botanic Inn or ''The bot'' is still very popular. Quite busy usually Wednesdays and Fridays with lots of people in Checked shirts and country accents lol. It's quite handy for me actually. I also like the speakeasy as it has a nice chilled-out, quieter atmosphere to it.

Did you go to Queen's?

Thanks for the response! My brother is a bit of an introverted, scientific type. I know Queens is in Belfast which is a city - did you still feel the campus vibe anyway + ample opportunities to socialise/get involved with sport?

Oh yeah, definitely. No shortage of clubs/socs. I have talked to people from Mountaineering, Surfing and Swimming clubs. Plently of bars (as you may have read). Queens PEC is excellent, 25m pool with 3 lanes and a recreation lane. Diving pool and Gym + loads of other areas. You should come and visit.
