The UCLAN course contains a fair amount of cosmology and astrophysics, which are mathematically demanding, but I think would give you more options for postgraduate study. There don't seem to be any preparatory maths modules, which I find surprising, but I guess they teach you what you need to know as you go along. I'd be inclined to drop them an email asking about the maths content and how it's handled.

The Birkbeck course focuses much more on planetary science (as the title suggests) and has a lot more geology type study. It's going to be the easier of the two courses imo, but has a narrower focus. If this is what really appeals to you, then it's a good choice, but your postgrad options would be more limited to this area.

A friend of mine does Astronomy at UCLan and loves it. Did you end up applying?
