Defecating quite a lot?

Hi folks,

Obviously given the subject I'd rather remain anon...anyhow I've been going for a 'number 2' a fair bit recently , a little bit more than I have in the recent past (twice, or sometimes 3 times, a day). Now I do eat quite a lot, including a fair few things that are high in fibre (like Weetabix, wholemeal bread, plenty of fruit inc. satsumas, bananas, apples & pears, potatoes, pasta, etc), and I also eat pretty fast (which has been commented on by people before). I sometimes feel a little bloated/sick after my main evening meal but even though I have a fair few 'stools' a day it never hurts and I've never noticed anything untoward like blood or mucus in there, and it's never been diarrhoea, though it does sometimes feel like I can't empty my bowels properly.
I'm going to go to the doctor about this but I was wondering what any of you with some knowledge in this area make of it...can this be caused solely by eating a lot of high-fibre food, maybe the eating too quickly thing as well, or could it be symptomatic of something like IBS or worse?

Thanks!

Would have said because your eating quite alot that would be the cause? I doubt its IBS because thats normally extremes of diarrhoea or constipation that are involved, have u tried taking anything? The feeling of not emptying properly could be bloatedness? Somethin like rennies might help?

i would say its more of the high-fibre factor tbh.
If you've been like it for ages i guess it could be normal for you, I know for me the amount of times i 'go' during a day differs each day.

If you're worried I guess you could go to the doctors but I would've thought this is just 'normal' for you.

leave this anon or delete please. I've always gone twice a day, and when I do eat five fruit and veg a day I go maybe four or five times, it's mad. So you're not alone...

Thanks for the replies. Certainly reassuring Mr/Miss anon #2, I do eat a lot of fruit, as well as a lot of fibre and meat/fish. I've started eating more in the last month or so too actually as I've been going to the gym more (it should be noted that I also seem to find myself hungry every few hours too). Actually I meant to say in the original post but last Saturday I had a bit of a crappy day eating-wise (eating chips, chocolate, and white bread), and on Sunday I only 'went' once.
Think I'll still check it with the doc but I am feeling reassured.

Do you chew a lot of gum, drink a lot of sugarfree drinks or anything like that?

You know the "contains a source of phenylalalalalalaline, may produce laxative effects" kinda stuff :P

"Help, I'm going more than once a day!"

I'm not being cruel, or callus, but going anywhere upto three or so times a day is perfectly normal, especially when you're eating a lot of fibre, and fruit. I wish I could go that often, I often find it diffucult!

Well no, I know you jest but I know there's nothing wrong with going more than once a day, it's just I've a noticed an increase in my own...'stool frequency', shall we say. I'm not overly concerned about it but I'm going to go and have a word to the GP about it anyway.

Don't think so...a lot of fruit juice, milk and sometimes coffee/tea (which I never used to). Recently been eating loads of satsumas though (as soon as I start to sniff/sneeze I want that Vitamin C injection :p: !)

You only get out what you put in.

I'd imagine its a lot of fibre. Some people are supposed to have a lot when they have IBS and some aren't. I'm one of the latter. Often a lot of fruit can give you a bad stomach.

Supirsed no one has picked up on eating fast part!
You need to slow down and enjoy your food as well as chewing it as that is when your food is ready for your stomach and all the nutrients are absorbed from the food (said Gillian McKeith).
If three times a day is normal for you, its normal!

I thought going to the toilet several times a day was a sign of a healthy diet

the reason you only went once when you had a rubbish day eating wise is because you had a rubbish day eating wise. eating healthy means you go often, eating unhealthily means you hardly go at all and when you do, it smells bad.

you are just healthy. although eating slower is good for the digestive system.

If your diet hasn't changed recently but your bowel habits have then it's worth seeing your gp

No, whatever is normal for you is normal. All Doctors will tell you this. As long as your poo is not like a Sloopy Joe or you are constipated, then you are fine. If you start to become anal (excuse the pun) about your toilet habits then its not right, you will notice to much.
All poo is, is undigestable fibre, so pooing more or less then someone is just a reflection of your diet.

Not always. I'm a very healthy eater and hardly go at all unless anything disagrees with me. I'm more likely to go if I eat unhealthy food.

Yeah that's the point I was making - I've noticed it before as well.

Yeah I've booked an appointment for Tuesday...may not tell me anything you guys haven't & may be a bit of a waste of time but that's what they get paid for! Better to be safe than sorry anyhow...

Cheers for the replies again :yy:

Whats the problem exactly?
You eat to quick, slow down, drink two litres of water (more or less) and exercise. You are perfectly healthy.
