If I were applying to computer science, most universities will ask for a grade B in gcse maths, but would that matter to them if I received grade B in A level maths, but C in gcse?

Depends on the university, I imagine most will accept an A level as an alternative, but you won't know for sure until you ask the admissions officer.

It may depend on how old it is. The oldest guy on my access course had a higher in maths (level 6) but still had to do level 5 including the national exam because his previous qualification was too old
