    Hi,
My name is Maya Blanco and I'm currently studying my GCSE's . Next year i will be choosing my A-levels and later go on onto University. I was wondering how the student life was in Cambridge. Is it very stressful with hardly any time to spare? Are there fun extra curricular activities for students? Does the University offer efficient support for students?
    Thank you.

From what I have heard it is very stressful there and the students do work hard, particularly with the Natural Science Degree. When I visited the JCR seemed a bit plain and there was not much going on, from talking to the students there you had to make an effort inn order to socialise. There are a few clubs and societies of course which vary depending on the college. Some societies are quite weak and inactive, others are better. I have heard mixed reviews about the welfare system. People at Queens have told me the welfare there is very good, whereas people at other colleges have told me different.
I don't know if that helped, but that is what I felt when I went there and what have been told by the students there.

Cambridge can be quite intense but that's a function of the short terms, the hard work necessary to succeed in the course AND having a good time too.

Don't worry there IS spare time and plenty of opportunities to take part in all sorts of things from college sports to the many different clubs and societies. Or just hang out with friends.

Have a look at the Alternative Prospectus for some inspiration (and perhaps reassurance).

Also, yes student welfare is important at Cambridge. It can always be improved but on the whole Cambridge and the collegiate system is pretty good at supporting people who need it. At least as good as most other universities. (The dropout rate is very low.)

It might be worth applying for the excellent Shadowing Scheme.
