The Student Room Group

A dedicated Mary's space.

For some reason, poor old Mary's is a little left out of the discussion boards... i keep wanting to read posts about Mary's but sifting through all the other threads is proving a little tiresome. (or else.. i'll admit that i just want to make it easy... you could call me lazy...) So - this is my attempt at gathering up some information, opinions and ideas on what to expect from Mary's on arrival.

For instance.. i REALLY want to know how much space there is for stuff (clothes etc) in the rooms... is it likely that we'll be sharing as freshers? What do people think about the buffet lunch? worth it or skipping it? What kind of time is best to arrive... is there a time that is deffinately too late? What is the etiquette on having poeple stay overnight?

Please voice opinions... ideas, information and fears... (oooh.. check the rhyme)
and share what you can with all the new first years.
(this could go on..)

Heya

I think there're only three Mary's girls on ukl so far - you, lil-pink-stars and myself.
I'm not going to the buffet lunch, but I'm sure it'll be nice if you do decide to go.
The room I stayed in at Easter was quite small-ish, but not too small, and the cupboard was pretty big. I think the rooms aren't all the same size, but they try and make up for it, by having us change rooms every term, so everyone gets to have one of the better rooms at some point, and everyone has to share at some point. (Actually, I think sharing'll be fun.)
Locationwise, Mary's is fab...and we're just gonna have such a great time. I love our little Mary's handbook...the freshers' reps all seem lovely.

I've just finished my first degree at Durham and am moving on elsewhere now for a change having spent the last 3 years in Durham! I was at Mary's and if anyone wants to know anything, please ask me and I'll try to fill you in on anything you want to know.

When I first arrived in Durham, I was a little nervous and unsure of what to expect as I imagine you are feeling now? College was most welcoming and some of my closest friends I have now are those I made that first day I got there and we met other freshers over coffee I recall.

After the manicness of freshers' week, things soon settled down and I learnt that you get out of college what you put in it and the same can be said for all the Durham colleges. Many people didn't put Mary's down as their first choice, myself included and it is simply a case of making the most of things..college rooms are amongst the best in the university. I had a big room for every term in 1st year and never had to share...in 2nd year, the livers out facilities were very good indeed and we had a dedicated rep who looked after us all! Food is not at all bad..although everyone moans about it but if you are used to institutional food, you will probably be fine..it served me well!

Anyway, please get in touch if you have any worries..but just go with a positive attitude, that's my advice!

Aww,... check you out. That was a really helpful post, thank you - apparently its a common fear for everyone - the all girl space - and i'm starting to see that it may not be quite as i imagine. Besides, like you say - plenty of guys around everywhere else.. i'm sure we'll cope fine.

Bit weirded out about the room sharing possibility though - i know it sounds bad - but i'll just be paranoid about some things. Like, snoring when i'm drunk.. and trying to keep stuff in a respectable pile. Still, i guess i'll just hope for the best, and a leniant roommate!!
